Congo African Gray Parrot
Hello!
I am a new member and I have been a congo african gray pet owner for 5 years now, im a teenager trying to focus on my school life as well as taking care of my bird, no one in this household takes care of him other than me. My bird has entered my life in 2020 when my parents originally got him as a birthday gift for my younger brother but unfortunately everyone lost interest in the bird and he has been my responsibility ever since and i love him dearly but im afraid im not taking care of him properly so i came on here to ask my question.

My question here is, i recently started giving my african gray some new pellets, he's been on a free-feeding 100% seed diet (padovan's grandmix) up until i went to the vet and have been told im doing it wrong. I started giving him what the vet recommended which is the Harrison's bird food, pepper time life coarse and it's been 2-3 weeks, i never really paid much attention to his poops/droppings, but i just noticed today that his poops have been watery and dont have much feces (green fecals) in them like they usually do, i still havent waited for time to pass to see if this is a temporary situation but i thought i'd ask if this is normal just in case it doesn't go away. his diet consists of 10-15 grams of harrison's bird food and 5 grams of padovan's grandmix for the entire day divided into two meals. can someone please help me and tell me if his diet is normal , if this is anyway related to his pellets.

note: he is overweight.

please help and thank you.

Welcome to the forums @Habi_Dabi27 and your Gray - please don't forget to tell us his name :) Harrison's is indeed a very good brand of pellet, I've been feeding them to my flock for a year or two now and they love it! Your Gray, however is transitioning from a purely seed diet to the pellets, so it's very important to make sure that he is actually eating them and not just eating those seeds and avoiding the pellets entirely. I don't have a Gray but I've read that they can be quite wary about trying new things, indeed when I first transitioned my cockatiels from seed to pellets it took probably 8 weeks for one of them to start eating pellets at all! I also note that you said you feed two meals per day? Forgive me if I have misunderstood, but parrots generally prefer to graze throughout the day, so I think it would be better if you made his food available all day long. And fresh veggies should be provided every day too, my guys love their broccolini, endive, bok choy, peas and corn.

Hopefully some folks who do have Grays will be along to help you out further, but in the meantime welcome again, and please don't forget to post some pics cos we love baby photos around here :)

Hi there, and welcome 🤗

When I transferred my parrots from a seed diet to pellets all of their droppings changed. If my parrots eat their beets one would think their droppings have blood in them. When they were on a seed diet their droppings were more firm, and black & white in color. When I transferred to a pellet diet it changed to watery droppings that were more green, and white in color. It also changes throughout the day based on what they are eating. I have my parrots on a variety diet.

It’s really hard to judge a situation online as there isn’t any photos, and if it is a medical issue you should consult a vet.

Thank you for taking care of your African gray even when everyone lost interest. That’s really sad to hear. Hopefully you are able to take him out, and give him some attention so he isn’t lonely. It would be challenging to manage a parrot, and all of the responsibilities of a teen at the same time. I am sorry you are going through this.

You should put a piece of clean white paper towel in his cage and collect his poops overnight. Photograph them in the morning and post the pictures here.
