Ah, the vacuum

This morning I cleaned Buddy's cage, he was in an exceptional mood, eyes pinning, cheeks puffy, tail spread out like a peacock, mimicking new sounds and words I'd say or make. Finished up with the vacuum and that is when Husband walked in and sat on the couch. Turn vacuum on and like expected, Buddy is all lovey dovey and I swear he could spread his tail to go 360 degrees around his body, lol.

Husband points out Buddy, and how crazy he looks. I look at Buddy and died laughing, his eyes were pinning so tight he barely had pupils, and I have never seen him fluff up so much he looked like a green ball of fluff with a flat, fat tail, and he was crunched up in the corner of the cage as close as he could get to me, flat pressed against the bars. I never turned the vacuum off, opened the cage door and he stepped up and ran to my shoulder, making all kinds of jabbering noises. He was in such a good mood he let Husband scratch his head for a whole 2 seconds, lol!!! He didn't try to bite him.

I would love to know what it is about Amazons and vacuums, today was Husband's first experience because I typically clean during the week. Great morning though.

That Buddy is so funny. Sounds adorable! Raven the Pionus tries to bathe in his water bowl when he hears the vacuum.

Lol, it is totally a "zon thing" to LOVE vacuums! Glad Buddy allowed your husband some scratches!

Lila always goes swimming in her water dish when I turn on the vacuum... I don't know why.

My greenwing likes to stick her beak into the shop vac, and get her face sucked up. (Just the beak, no feathers!)

The rest of my birds couldn't seem to care less.

Mango does the same thing. This is the only time he does his LOUD scream. But he does the fluffing up and running around the top of his cage like he's on fire!

Kiwi and Tater flip out when we vacuum too. (Also if we use the hairdryer, blender, or coffee grinder) - basically any kind of "loud machine" noise. Tater pins his eyes and screams whatever his current happy/exited phrase is (Lately it's to make the "PEW PEW PEW!" "fake laser" sound. Kiwi pins, fans his tail, and marches back and forth all around the tops of the cages.

Love all the different reactions, the pew pew cracks me up! I wondered if it was white noise he liked. He has a little 6" heater fan by his cage on the window sill. I'll turn it on low to blow warm air into one side of his cage, this was if he doesn't want warm air he can get away from it. I put it there for cold days because in winter we don't use the heater very much, we layer up where he can't. Now after showers I turn his heater on low and he runs to stand in front of it, spreading his wings to catch the warm air, I think Birdman called it bat wings or vampire wings, but I crack up because he does that and he turns himself so the air hits him. He doesn't get excited with the fan like he does the vacuum.

So when I vacuum, I have a parrot hitting on me, fluffed up as far as his feathers will fluff, fat green cheeks, and purring, a pug that goes under the bed, the other pug gets on the couch, and the bulldog attacks the vacuum, picking it up off the floor while I'm trying to vacuum. I'll have to try the hair dryer now, lol.

My YSA is so scared of the vacuum. She would start flying into windows if I leave her cage open.
The DYHA is just sitting watching me and usually mimics the sound of the vacuum the best she can....LOL

And here I thought it was just me! Sammy (yellow-naped 'Zon) loves the sound of the vacuum, too! He chatters joyfully, struts around, sings to get the dogs howling (his favorite entertainment in the whole world - he gets them going, then sits back, laughs loudly, and enjoys the fun) and is clearly disappointed when the vacuum's turned off. Glad to hear others have this, too - I thought maybe he was just nuts (okay, he is, but we love that!).

I read something a while ago that the sound of the vacuum is similar to a storm for them?

I have laminate flooring downstairs and am rather bad at housework so mine rarely experience a vacuum... I recently bought a bargain Dyson and tried it downstairs- OMG, my birds LOVED it!! Milo (B&G mac) went into full-on shower mode, all fluffy and smooshy and flappy, while the amazons screamed, hung upside down like bats and flapped madly.

Turn the hoover off and they all stop instantly and look around bewildered an innocent as if trying to work out where all the noise was coming from...

Mine all get similarly excited if we are playing musical instruments. They LOVE when my partner plays the violin, to the point of it being really distracting to actually practice the violin at all. They scream and yodel along and holler "GOOOODDDDD BOOOOOY!" and "PEW PEW PEW!"
