I just ā€œrescuedā€ an American crow today. I dropped him off here https://wrcmn.org/. I hope he makes it. I was taking my dog for a walk, and found this little guy on the ground surrounded by corn cobs. He ate some of them. When I tried to scare him off the ground I realized he couldn’t fly. I couldn’t just leave him there. Crows are incredibly intelligent, but a flightless bird on the ground in a neighborhood full of cats & dogs doesn’t stand a chance.

I plan on emailing the rehab place in a few days to check the status. I was informed during the drop off that the West Nile virus is going around in crows, and it’s deadly to them.

I wanted to correct myself. It’s called the West Nile virus that is going around in crows. It’s transferred by mosquitos is what I was told.

It made me sad to find out this news of course. I highly suspected the crow had a broken wing. When he spread them he looked like Nico, and appeared to struggle opening the one wing. Nico has a broken wing at the shoulder, and Blue’s is broken at the wrist. Blue can open his wings but struggles lifting his broken wing, or keeping it open. Nico struggles to even open his broken wing. The crows wing just looked similar to me since I am around it every day. Both of my parrots obviously wouldn’t survive in the wild.

How did your birds break their wings? What treatments did they get? Do they ever try to fly?
I had a budgie break a wing many years ago. It was a very bad open fracture with bleeding. A rat had snuck into his cage one night and little Buddy freaked out, flapped wildly, snagged his wing on something, and it snapped. Of course it was 3am so I had to wait until after 7am to call and bring him in but they saw him right away. They were unable to do the surgery they would have done on a much larger bird on such tiny wings so they aligned the bones best they could and taped his wing to his body for over a month while it healed. He was hospitalized for about a week after the injury. Buddy could never extend the wing after but lived another 9 years before dying at 13 fron kidney failure. All Buddy ate his whole life was seed.

My parrots aside from Kiwi are all adopted. They came to me this way. I have taken all of my parrots to a vet shortly after adopting them. They were all old breaks. They absolutely try to fly. It’s rather sad to watch. Nico especially because he will hit the floor with such force. He can’t control his wing whatsoever. Blue is a a little more graceful there. The breaks are in different places may have some to do with it. Blues was broken by a previous owner, and Nico’s was broken by a dog.

Didn't you tell us before that Blue's owner had beaten and abused him? Stuff like that makes me so angry! Nico is lucky that dog didn't kill him!

It's so sad to watch a bird try to fly when it's impossible, especially when only one wing is disabled. After Buddy broke his wing and the bandage was removed he would come out of his cage and attempt to launch as usual but only one wing would extend and he would flip and land on his head or back. He tried over and over, never accepting that his wing just wasn't going to work. I tried only letting him out when I had his cage on the carpeted floor to lessen the impact of his inevitable fall but eventually I just had to keep him in his cage so he didn't get further injured. Trimming his good wing didn't help because he would still try with the same result. I got him a larger cage and he did live a very long life for a budgie.

I can prevent the flying. Nico only does it if I leave a room, and he can’t see me when he’s out. Blue only try’s to fly when he gets beyond mad. Primarily when guests are over that gets anywhere near me. He’s already screaming at them, and showing them wings. Both are in their cages in these situations once I learned the hard way. With how many owners both Nico, and Blue have had I’m sure a lot of information got lost. When I was adopting them, and the shelters were going through paperwork with me honestly I felt like these were stories. No one had any vet records when they surrendered these parrots, and it’s like their life began at the shelter.
