I'm still fairly new to Amazon body language although most of what I've whitnessed is fairly easy to figure out after seeing it a few times. Today I was playing with my female yellow nape who is still very young (1.4 yrs). We were playing with a foot toy that I would give to her and she would grab with her beak and then toss back to me.... she got very excited by this and we played for awhile. Not too long after she fluffed up, eyes pinning, tail feathers spread, and wings slightly lifted away from her body while she strutted around the length of the top of her cage. I've never seen her do this. I've seen my male pionus act this way and always thought of it as his male strutting as I had seen with my male cockatiel.

Is this just typical amazon excited behavior or could it mean that she could be a he?

Just curious....

It's normal yes. Either excited or irritated generally, sometimes can be followed with a pinch. ;)

Yes, it's VERY typical behavior for an agitated Amazon, and both males & females do it. :)

They sure look pretty when they strut their stuff, don't they? :D

Yep, agitation or excitement.Very beautiful display but watch your fingers LOL

Thanks guys!

Perfect description of amazon excitement . . . for better or worse.

My rule-of-thumb is when I can see all the pretty tail feathers, my 'zon must step off my arm and onto, well, pretty much anything other than me.

Re: AmAzon body language

KB, that's funny, but yes, I try to keep them at arm's length if they are fanning tails, pinning eyes and
"getting crazy" as I call it.

I try to warn visitors, but a few times they didn't listen and got a bite. :11::30::11::30:

Why??

I think maybe my family are a bit crazy too. Haha!
Best of luck with your sweetie!
