Hi there ,
My name is Karen and I am about to become the proud carer of an amazon.
This was not planned....by me but..as happens I am now filling my head with all info I can feed on.
My training experience with dogs and horses I hope stands me in good stead to keep this 5month old handreared baby social... The dilemma I now find is that the woman who no longer wants this bird would also like me to take its sibling.
At the moment they are stepping up allowing and enjoying petting and are very interested in strangers.
My worry is, as inexperienced with amazons, will having 2 and not being sure of sexes lead to turbulant adolecents...Having just survived 2 human ones I am wary... and aware of the "terrible2s".
They will be indoors in a cage 6ft 4 high 3ft 6 long and 2ft 6 deep...as u can tell I am to old to master metric:eek: . The house is large and we have a stand for visiting the other rooms.

And my sons have agreed to be their legal guardians as sure enough these wee birds I hope will out live me in their long and happy lives.

Also aware of teflon horrors. Are all other enamelled cookwear items safe?
Sorry for long post, but I dont take this decision lightly, and having had my horse for 19yrs I am well aware of the commitment required...not to mention the blood sweat and tears:smile040: when shareing ur life and family with anything with fur or feathers.
Look forward to advice and support
Cheers all K

Welcome Karen,
I can't manage metric either so you are definately in the right place. :D
The terrible two's, well what can we say about them, they are.................... terrible lol.
My Grey is coming up for two and its not been too bad yet, but I'm sure you are going to cope especially after raising human kids yourself. Most cookware is okay, except as you say Teflon, but hairdryers also have teflon in them  Something I never even thought about till I got my guys. As far as having two is concerned I sometimes think its easier and being together now there's no having to get them used to one another etc.

:18: In that case I won't tell you what comes after Junior.
Look forward to seeing pics of your guy/s and talking more soon.

Should have said this before, but avoid all non-stick cookware, Gives a real good excuse to buy new stuff. :D

Hi Karen and welcome. Some toxic stuff for parrots are alcohol, avacado and i would try to avoid dairy products also. By far not a concise list so check some out for yourself also. :)

Hey Karen, I am also an owner of an amazon, which breed of amazon are they? I have an orange wing. I know how you are feeling, my little girl was a huge handfull when i got her, still is actually. I work in a pet store and she was left in a window with no love or attention, so she had become very ill tempered but is starting to come around. she is still very careful about letting people touch her. You could easily find out which sex they are by going to healthgene.com the tests are only 19.00 and take about a week to get the results, your best bet is to get a blood sample. You do so by wrapping them in a towel and clipping one nail a little short, be careful not to go too short. Make sure you have a little container of quick stop to stop the bleeding once you get your sample. If you have any questions i'll try to help as much as I can.

Hi Bill, My birds absolutely LOVE cheese; marble cheese, cheddar cheese, mozzarella. They even like milk. When I am eating they will sometimes try to get to my cereal bowl and drink the milk from my cheerios or eat my oatmeat.

Should I not be letting them do that?

While dairy is not fatal unless your birds were fed ten tones at once it is a food that is not recomended in large amounts thats all. So cut back if it is offered in excess othewise dont worry yourself too much. Caffeine is not a ggod idea either but our lorikeet has her head in my cup every chance she can lol. :)

Here here, Bucc loves cheese and would do just about anything to get it, also he has been known to stick his head in my coffee when I'm not looking. lol.:04:
