Baby Nanday younger than I thought?

I looked at the videos and now know what to do, however, I'm scared to death to aspirate the poor little guy (who's name is now Finley). I'm going to do my best but I did order a spoon that will get here Thursday so that will be good, just have to make it till then on the syringe. The good news is that after the evening hand feeding he seemed so much more energetic and his tail quite pointing downwards and was all over his cage and me, pooping, playing, attempting to eat solids and drinking water. I'm assuming if he didn't seem off I haven't don't anything wrong with the hand feeding yet right?

If you aspirate him you will know. Just go slowly and that won’t happen. It’s a much bigger risk in tiny babies, very slight in a bird his age :)

So I have fed Finley twice today already because he was begging around lunch time with his little body going crazy when I touched his beak. He's such a baby still...he so slow and his muscle control is not quite right either. The tests haven't come back yet but I don't think he's sick...also he looks really big too. I'm so confused....

I don't know about any health issues he may have, but I weaned my Senegal myself and I started thinking she was never going to get off the formula and I'd be feeding her with a syringe for the next 30 years. When I thought I had fully weaned her she would go back to that baby bird noise they make when they want their formula. Just keep giving it to him when he wants it and he'll turn his head away when he's done. Also offer him a bunch of different bird friendly foods. Peanut liked eating warm mashed garbanzo beans out of my hand and would do that baby bird head bobbing thing while she was eating it.

Thanks...your post has made me feel much better Sandy!

You are doing the right thing! Your bird will be happier and healthier for the rest of his life because you are giving him what he needs. I’m sorry his breeder didn’t do his/her duty!

Sounds like you are doing all the right things with feeding the formula! Most babies will exhibit strong bobbing responses to being touched on the beak and they want that food! Keep on at it, weaning can be tricky but it doesn't last forever. Be sure to offer soft fruits and veggies to try (what Ollie eats, too) on a plate. Seeing another bird eat big bird foods also helps with the weaning process and encourages them to eat. Have Finley and Ollie been introduced yet?

Thanks for the encouragement guys! I just held him for 20 mins while he did that "feed me" squeal but I'm not going bto feed him again until like an hour before bed. Now he's digging in his food dish of the gross seed mix he was on at the pet store mixed with Ollie's pellets but doesn't seem to be actually eating them.

Ollie and Finley have not officially met because I want to make sure the tests negative for any transferable diseases first. They have had some walk by interactions where Ollie had his beak open ready to attack lol. They are in the same room right now with us and everyone is quiet and normal so that's good.

I never actually gave Peanut any seed mix until she was fully weaned based on the advice I got here. Now it only makes up a small percentage of her diet. If he's used to the seed I don't think I'd take it away, but I'd start offering him a variety of bird safe fresh vegetables, beans and a little fruit to go with it. He may learn to like it and if anything he'll enjoy shredding it up and making a big mess out of it

Okay do little Finley is much more energetic and perching better today and tail is no longer down, wings up and tight to his body and unfluffed. His tests are negative for any possible diseases or bacterial infection that is detectable by the vet. His electrolytes were down a bit but he wasn't really eating so that's to be expected. Basically the knowledge gained by this parrot community allowed me to figure out the Finley was not yet fully weaned and not really eating his solid foods. Clearly he'd not eaten enough for several days and might have starved by now if I hadn't gotten formula and started feeding him 3 times a day. I'm so thankful to you guys and together (me watching him like a hawk) we solved the problem and he's on his way yo being a happy healthy young pup! I'm on instructions to hand feed him for the next 3 weeks. Also, we'll find out by next week if Fin is actually a boy or a Finlet!

My great grandpa's name was Finley. This is the only other time I've heard that name. While it's a cute name for a bird, I decided against naming my son after him lol.

Finley seems to be perking up quite nicely now! He's more vocal and has a ton of personally. I'm feeding him 2 to 3 times a day and closely monitoring him eating other foods. Instead of the seed mix today I gave him warm mushy pellets mixed with some millet and pears baby food. He picked at it a bit and seemed to eat some but not enough. My vet had a call with me and told me to gear up for 3 more weeks of hand feeding. In other news, we couldn't be happier to have expanded our bird family to 2 birds instead of one. I think part of the happiness comes from truly wanting a 2nd bird not just getting a "friend" for Ollie. Ollie doesn't need a friend... I'm his friend. I'm serious loving my new family member (even though he clamped down on my finger while playing this morning...holy ouch) kids eh?! Haha
