I had a really bad weekend. I had a paper due on Monday that I put off until last minute. Friday I had to put down my 13 year old lab that I've had for 12 years :( because of cancer (R.I.P Duke, I will forever love you and miss you). Saturday Rome had to go the vet (anytime shes upset and stressed I'm unhappy). Through all this we've had tons of rain all weekend and its been cold (I hate the cold). I finally get through part of my paper but the my printer wasn't working. So on Sunday I had to drive out to my moms (which is fine, thats where we buried Duke so I got to see him). She lives out in the country in a very remote area.

On the way to my moms we see some vultures (my favorite bird ever, I love them) eating something as we passed by I thought I saw something small. Apparently so did Tommy, I wasn't sure what I saw but he asked if I had seen a kitten back there. I said of course we have to turn around now and we did. Thank God we did. There was a little kitten trying to eat a dead turtle with the vultures. The road we were on the speed limit is 55 but everyone does 60-70. I was for sure that it would be ferrel and was worried that it would try to run and would get hit by a car. Well Tommy went right over to it and picked it up. We started looking around and we found a second little kitten. They are approx 3weeks old, emaciated and full of fleas. One was trying to eat the turtle, the other one was just sitting there barely able to sit itself up. They let us handle them, so I was angry and thought for sure some one must have dumped them but after combing the are for more kittens we found a dead adult cat near where the second kitten was that looked like it had been dead for 3-4 days :(. They lost their mommy and were literately starving to death.

I'm about to finish with my RN but I'm still employed at the local Veterinary Emergency Clinic, so I took them both up there, had them checked out. Other than being thin they are completely healthy. We bathed them, blow dried them, got rid of the fleas and fed them. The black and white one is a female (she was the weaker of the two sitting by mom), the grey tabby is male (the one trying to eat the turtle). Its a good thing I found them when I did, not only had it been raining all weekend but Sunday night we had a cold snap (they would not have made it).

Of course I already have too many animals, so I found them a home. I got some pics of them last night before a friend of mine took them (sitting on their new mommy's lap). I already miss them but know they will be well cared for. Its amazing how much stronger they got with 24 hours of warmth and food.

They would not hold still for pics. Oh and to let you know just how small they are, kittens usually run about 1pound a month (1 month old= 1 pound, 2 months = 2lbs etc.) the black and white female is 5.9 ounces, the grey tabby male is 7 ounces. They should both be just under a pound right now.

So sorry about your pup.:( I had to put down my 11 year old Westie last year and I still miss him everyday.

Such sweet baby kitties. Glad you found them.

I'm very sorry about your lab.

It's a good thing you found those kittens.

Sorry about your lab. I'm so glad there are people in the world like you that stop and help. I can't tell you how many times i have seen people drive by little kittens and dogs wandering down the highway and not stop! I often am left to pick them up and their find their home. thanks for what you did.

I'm so sorry about Duke. How wonderful of you to save those precious new lives! :)

Sorry for your loss of Duke, I know how hard it is to let go of a loved one and the kittens were very lucky for you to have found them, for sure. Some of my sweetest cats came from a neighbor who was going to drown them!

You poor thing !!! I'm so sorry about your Duke. Rest in peace Duke.
Somehow , I think you were meant to find those kittens.
If it wasn't for Duke being buried at your Mom' s place , you might not have taken that ride and you wouldn't have found those poor tiny souls.
If you don't mind me saying , Duke saved them too.
Your a angel for helping them through and finding them loving homes.
Thank you .

I thought the same thing! You guys saved those two little kittens. Now they'll get to have a good life and be well taken care of.

I'm sorry about Duke. I lost my white shepherd in November 2008. We had her as a puppy and she lived to be 15. I grew up with her and miss her so much. I know your pain. Remember the good times and think of those tiny kittens Duke helped save.
