Bed Time ...

I was just wondering what all of your bird's sleeping schedules are like. I think we have addressed this topic here before, but it's a good one to discuss again.

Hamlet and Mac are both in bed by 5:30 and they sleep until 7 - 7:05 AM ... I have always wondered if that is too much sleep for them ... but that is the routine. at about 4:30 they start to calm down and curl up with us and are in their rooms by 5:30 ...

So, what's your nightly schedule like?

All my birds go to bed at 8pm they get up at 9am unfortunately my human chidren never seem to go to bed. This really gets in the way. The 7 year old has ADHD and has not gone to bed before 10-11 ever, the 5 year old is just a brat LOL and goes 9-10.
I do cover the birds if I forget by 8.30 the Sennie is having a fit.

Auggie gets to stay up late it seems. He goes to bed around 10. We get up around 7 on average. Then he goes back in his cage for several hours during the day.

Auggie would never sleep for 13 hours.... If I try to sleep in to late he'll get me up.

Aruba, my BGM, is STRICTLY a dawn-to-dusk parrot. She gets cranky at dusk (around 6pm) and DOES NOT want to be bothered until 7am! We decided to "test" her last night and she if she wanted to come out & play around 8pm. Ummm....let's just say we won't do that again!

I usually put Gigi and Sisqo to bed around 8:30...it was a bit earlier whenever it got darker earlier.

I don't think that they get very much sleep though, even though they are not in the living room anymore. My sister usually watches tv until midnight and keeps the tv really loud. My dad gets up around 4 a.m. and is very loud, my mom and I get up at 5:30 a.m.

What do you all use when you cover your birds cages? Right now I use dark colored sheets, but I've thought about buying the specialty bird cage covers. Is it worth it?

Nicole I went to the Fabric store and bought fabric that I use I have heavy weight for winter and thinner for the summer this is much cheaper. For the cage with the play top I sewed magnets in it to stick to the cage around the play stand.

I live alone, so when I go to be my place is pretty quiet and dark. For a while I didn't cover him at all. But once winter came I put a heater next to his cage and a blanket over the top to help retain some heat. I don't cover the whole thing like some of the commercial cage covers do, but it covers the top and around his hut where he sleeps. That way if he gets up before I do he can go to the bottom of the cage and watch the sunrise... and scream at me to let me know the sun is rising.

AD got to love those alarm clocks we have. My Older Tiel at 7.15 every day does an alarm impression, Must be when the old home got up. Sounds like a dogs squeeky toy.

That's cute, Lori...my BGM isn't too swift in the early am, but my CATS are! The orange tabby will claw the side of the mattress and my white longhair will STOMP across my face until I get up...It's really difficult to sleep in when a cat bites the inside of your nose! They know my husband won't move so I'm the one to get up and give everyone breakfast.

I have dark black fleece pill blankets that my studio was going to throw away ... once covered in baby pee, washed (twice) and they make a great cage cover ... I, like AD, don't cover the entirety of the cage. I cover the upper half and they can come 'downstairs' in the morning and see the sunshine.

I put Wookums to bed around 8:30 every night and he is up at 5-ish, which is when my mum generally gets up unless it's an early day for the both of us. She's taken it upon herself to uncover his cage and change out his water as she makes her coffee.

I have to cover his cage all the way though, since it is in the livingroom and we really have no other place to put it. There are people who regularly like sitting up late and watching television with the lights on, so he has to be completely covered and dark in order to get any shut eye. D:

LOL, aren't cats just great? My orange domestic longhair was good, she'd sit quietly on my bed until I got up. xD I miss her so much. Our other cat and dog however are completely different stories. xD

I don't really have a typical schedule, but my senegal tends to be asleep by 9:30ish. Whether it's on my shoulder, in his cage, or on the play perch.

If there are a lot of people over though, forgetaboutit! He's too excited to be apart of all the activity to risk sleeping!

As for waking up, I'm up around 5-6am. I might take him out for a moment in the morning, but generally unless I make a ton of noise. He's still sleeping when I head to the gym.

So are the cage sleep covers really that important? I haven't been using one. He has two sleep huts, but lately my lil guy has been sleeping out in the open. On the very closest branch near the door, just anxious to get out

7:00PM - 8:00 AM during the winter when the kids are in school. The birds wake up at 7:00AM cuz they can here the kids getting ready for school but they mind waiting until 8:00 to come out of their cage but if I wait until 8:05 then all hell breaks loose.

8:00 PM -8:00 - 9:00 AM during the summer. CUZ I WANNA SLEEP IN A BIT.

All of my birds (except my LSC2)cages are partially covered. They are covered on the back and sides about half way. This is the way they prefered to sleep.
My LSC2 cage is covered half way on all sides including the front.

I don't use some fancy smancy cover I just use black bed sheets which seem to work fine. We tried covering Lily's cage the same way as the others when we got her but she wanted the front covered and screamed until we figured that out.

I'd say no, but it depends....

First, as with most others I'd say don't waste your money on any commercially made overly-expensive ones. An old blanket or sheet works great if you do want to use one at all.

If your birds are good without them its probably no worry. I use mine for two reasons: one, it can get chilly in the winter, even with a heater; two, sometimes I just need the lil-guy to shut up for a while. Being in an apartment if I need to get something done without being screamed at by him I need to cover him up (this is a rare occurrence, as if I am home he is almost always out.)

And THIRD, sometimes it acts as a birdy snooze button and can give you that extra 10 minutes of sleep in the morning before they start screaming ... :18:

Tabious goes to bed around 9-9:30 p.m.. If he falls alseep on top of the play gym he doesn't want to move at all. He trys his best to stay where he is. Then it's like a 10 minute battle to get him off and in his cage. So I have to make sure he is in the cage by 8:30 pm. He wakes up around 9:00 a.m. He lets me at least have a cup of coffee in the morning before he wants to come out. Also I don't cover him at all.

bedtime for my grey, poppy is about 10pm and he gets up as soon as my phone makes a noise ,or i move, or 8am whichever comes first . i live in a bungalow and he sleeps in the room next to mine. iv never covered his cage.

he got up early one day this week, escaped and by the time i woke up hed ripped up the washing up sponge and pecked several items in the fruit bowl, and was asleep on top of the kitchen door with his head back to front.

The Cockatiels and the finches go to bed at 8:00 PM. Baby, my Eclectus goes to bed at 8:30 PM. If I have to work they all get up at 8:15, if I'm home it might be a little later. In the winter the feds are all going to bed at 7 PM and get up at 7:15 AM.

This is an old thread, but I'm new and I live in a place where it is light 24/hrs a day in the summer, so I thought you all might be interested to find that Buddy puts himself to bed around nine, and doesn't really start his day until I start mine, whether that's 8am or 11 am, or even noon!

What a great guy, eh?

I was worried when I got him that he wouldn't really sleep at night, and would chatter at me, but he's so good!

My big Amazons in the past all clamored for attention right away, first thing. Not little 3/4 size Buddy! He's a sweetie. And it's more surprising because of the sunlight situation, too.
