Best beginner conure?

I think I would be able to handle a conure scream, my only concern was a nighttime, but I suppose that would not be a problem since it would be sleeping lol. I really want a maroon bellied now, since I have been doing the research and they do seem to be the quietest and most non-nippy of the conures, and I was just looking for cages...I think I can spend no more than $400 on a cage...any suggestions? So far these are what I found and have liked...

I know several people who had their Cockatiels live to be 30 years old. So as long as the individual understands the needs of birds period, age have nothing to do with anything as most of us will have to rehome our birds at some point as some of mine will out live me.

Conures can be loud, but mostly I think it's the shrill part. Some are less shrill. Our mitred was louder than our blue crown, but not as shrill.

It's not always the noise, it's the personality and the attitude equiped with a can opener on the face.

Then there's the destruction of items and furniture, and the responsibilty of owning a creature for the next 30 or 40 years who in the wild is NEVER alone .

I have a gcc and she is not loud as far as I am concerned How ever a t a bird park I stood beside a sun conure cage when the started to scream and my ears really hurt and started to ring . I had to cover my ears and leave. I decided then that no matter how pretty they were I would never bring one into my home. No offence to any one who has one but I could not take the pitch or volume.

You should really listen to bird screams on YouTube. More so than how loud or often a bird screams, it's the pitch that gets people. When my alexandrine screams, my roommates hate it, and I hardly notice it. When my friend's cockatiel does its little chatterbox type screaming, it drives me crazy. Different people just have different tolerances.

I'm in the conures screaming make me go nuts camp. I much prefer the noise of amazons or eclectus parrots.

18x18x18 is way too small in my opinion for a Sun Conure. I would say at least 36x30x40 would be about the smallest you could go with.

I was going to say that. You tube is a great place to give you an idea of the kind of "voice" they have.

And yes, people definitively have different tolerance for pitch.
I like GCCs and Crimsons (of course because I breed them ), however, my hears CAN NOT tolerate, Suns or Jendays! My GCCs do not scream non stop either, but in short burst, and for a purpose. The Conure that scream non stop has a problem with you or its living condition! PS: My Caiques are the loudest.

That's so NOT a good advice! I knew a Cockatiel who lived to see 30 years old! And birds are not disposable as to stay "start with one that will die sooner".
Re-homing is sometimes not the easiest bird to handle either. These birds usually have some behavioral issues that only an experienced bird keeper can handle. Not always of course, but often.

PS: there are great breeders who don't breed for volume but out of love for the species. They make sure they educate the prospective buyers and help them along the way, even after the bird is bought and in his new home. It is a great help for first time bird owner. The more genuine breeders out there, the less people will buy from pet store and hopefully vanquish bird mills.

My GCC is not loud, she is a lot quieter then the parakeets I use to have. I use to have anywhere from 2 - 15 parakeets at a time. They make noise all the time, my gcc does not. She makes all kinds of chirps, tweets and some squawks. It has taken some time, but she doesn't yell so much when I leave the room, and even when she does it is not bad. We encourage her to make softer sounds and it seems to work great, she is very smart. The only other time she really gets going is when she hears other parrots on the tv or computer. Or when she hears the baby rats squeaking (I breed rats). She does has never bitten me or my boyfriend. The only person she has gone after is my boyfriend, Brian's dad. And that is only if he tries to put his finger between the bars of her cage. She is great with him out of the cage and he watches her and the rest of the animals when we go away. He lets her have time out and plays with her too. When she does nip me, like when I am clipping her nails or putting her harness on it is very gentle. She has never broken skin and doesn't even leave a mark. She respects me but pushes Brian around. But all the animals push him around, he is a big softy with them. She is a lot of fun, I wouldn't trade her for the world. She loves both me and Brian, and has been good with other people too. She prefers Brian over me when he is in the room, but I kinda think that may be because she can't get away with as much with me, I enforce the rules, Brian gives into anything she wants. She is a beautiful, fun, playful, cuddly little bird with a great personality. I would highly recommend a GCC to anyone.

I got my GCC from Echo and would highly recommend her, she is a great breeder and has great birds. Ziva is so well adjusted, whatever Echo is doing it is working. Thanks Echo!! We love our little bratty girl.

Green Cheeks are great! They have the big parrot personality packed into a little body. My cheeky monkey loves to hang upside down and talks quite well, for a small parrot. Imitating us and laughing at our expense are the highlights of Trixie's day, lol. She can be nippy, but if you read her body language and handle her respectfully, she becomes a cuddle bunny, especially in the evenings.

I am a first time bird owner....and I have a GCC...he is the best thing ever! I love the fact that he is always cracking us up. He has learned to roll over, give five, kisses, and step up. He insists on being in the shower on his shower perch if we are taking a shower. And if he hears the water running and knows he mossed out you may hear a little noise from him. He has never been really loud. The worst is if I am raisin gmy voice at my daughter...he wants to yell over me. Otherwise in his short 9 months he has learned many words and phrases. Btw...he was a petco purchase....only because he picked me, and would not leave me alone when I was buying catfood, however...i was researching conures 6 months prior. Good luck

Not everyone wants to have to rehabilitate a bird, my first bird was like that, noone had ever messed with it and he was a pain, I eventually tamed him down and he went to a great home where he instantly bonded to the new couple and after that I decided I only want handfed babies. And you can buy a bird from a breeder and still be responsible, I spoil my BCC and do my best to make sure she is happy and healthy. It may work well for you to adopt or for someone with lots of experience but for newer people it may be best to get a bird with no behavior problems.
