Bingo to the vet

I took Bingo out of his cage this morning for his usual socializing time.
I noticed he had a discharge coming from one nostril (nare) and I thought I heard some unusual breathing noise (bubbling like noise).

Took him strait to the vet.
Blood test, throat swab, and trimmed his nails cuz he needed it. $350.
Blood test expected back tomorrow. Was given antibiotic for gram - bacteria on throat swab.
Vet did not hear anything in his lungs and I am grateful for that.
Only slightly overweight. He has been on a mostly pellet diet for at least a year.
I'm sure it's the people food he gets from us that is to blame for his weight, 558 grams if I remember that correctly.

Good catch right away Wes. Happy to hear you got him in to see his doc the same day. I'm guessing Napes are generally "heftier " than a BF?
Amy at his "porkiest" was at 524 currently at 485.

Ya these 'zon kids are definitely big chow hounds. Amy has no problem sampling anything he see's me munching on.

All normal.
white cell, red cell.
liver and kidney function normal.
calcium levels normal.

Since I brought Luna into the house he has been eating carrots and birdie bread. When he sees Luna eating something he is more willing to eat it.
I had never had any luck with veggies until now.

When he gets people food it's normally a token amount so he does not feel left out. You can't get away with substituting some kind of bird food for what you are eating, he is to smart for that. He knows very well what you are eating. He can identify what you are fixing when your still in the kitchen.
I don't know if it's smell or sound he keys in on. I do think that Parrots have a better sense of taste that what the "experts" say. It's possible there are some things they have no receptors for, like spice foods. Bingo loves spice food he must taste something but it is not a discomfort for him.

I just panicked when I saw a clear liquid running from one nostril.
He had been sleeping more and less active since his molt but that was a real red flag and something I had never seen. It's very dry here and running the heater dries the air out even more. That could have caused him to have a runny nose I guess.

per the Vet's instructions I am to continue antibiotics for 1 week and bring him back in for a follow up in 2 weeks.

That's right, you are in your dry time of the year!

Your right, dry air will cause that to happen as their body attempts to keep the airways from drying out. That said, your call to take Bingo to his Avian Vet is the right move. Some infections and also irritations can cause a like discharge. Much better to be safe and catch something early!

If you have a digital Temp /Humidity device, set it near your Parrots area. Check it regularly. With a temperature of 70 degrees (F), you should be looking for no less then 35 % Humidity with 45 % being your target. You will find that everyone will be happier. We float between 40 and 48 % Humidity depending on what is happening outside.

Are you being effected by the smoke from the wild fires? That can also, cause problems.

So very happy that Bingo pushed a strong blood screen!!!

AH, good news about Bingo. All tests normal, right?
I agree with parrots ability to tell what's cookin'. Besides having an natural clock that's rarely off by more then 10 minutes or so, Salty will get more agitated ( singing, mumbling and pacing) when my wife is cooking one of his favorite people foods, or if dinner is late.

Yeah, they certainly know what is for dinner. Mine will look over at the table and go to sleep if there is nothing he likes. Put anything with red sauce on the table, though, and the bird goes crazy. Loves pasta, eggplant, pizza, lasagna etc. I never knew you could have an Italian parrot!

I have an Asianzon..Amy loves chineese lol..water cress,snow pea's,carrots..even a little eggroll..all small quantity's tho..with MSG an all

The most common classification of what Amazons' will eat is: Food!

They may have some specific Food Groups that they enjoy more than others, but commonly if they see 'others' eating something, that's just an encouragement for them to eat it! That all said, if it is 'Good For Them,' it becomes more difficult to get them to eat it! Also, they take note as to what items we are eating and just as importantly, not eating and tend to avoid those items as well.

Ah Nigel must learn some of this amazon love for food. He loves to eat but changes preferences without rhyme or reason...one day apples are great and the next they are toss-worthy only to be picked up again when he feels like it.

Yep. He flung one at a time at me on the couch. Hit my foot once, the other three went on the couch or floor around me. Little snot.
