Bird backpacks

So recently I have seen pictures going around about these travel backpacks to carry your bird around in. what are your guy's thoughts on these, are they a safe and humane way to bring your little birdy around with you? I have 2 budgies(pip and pickle) and a green cheek(haymitch) that I would love to bring around, separately of course

These are very safe. I have the celltei pak-bird and it’s one of the best bird related items I’ve ever bought. But they don’t just have the pak o bird. Check the website put to see their array of travel items they have for birds of all sizes. They are on the high end of the price spectrum but they are exceptionally well built and one of the most popular for a reason.

They are safe if you get a good brands like Chris mentioned--- you just need to get your birds used to them first (or they will be scared etc)

LOLLLLLLLLLLLL-- carrier pigeon, carrier budgie..It could happen lol! Granted, the carrier pigeon is extinct, isn't it? What do they use them for on pigeons? Identification or weight training or something?

Well, I read a news article about someone in prison using them to smuggle drugs into the jail! LMAO but I don't know other than that. Maybe GPS tags? Would have to be something light, homers are strong birds but they are still pretty small. Between the size of a cocaktiel and a galah.



I have been fascinated by homers since I read a book about night flying pigeons carrying messages during one of the big wars as a child. I think it may even have been an American Girl book or something. Pretty cool, our society owes a lot to horses, dogs, and pigeons. History is fascinating.

I've been doing reading lately on ape communication studies done thru history... All I can say is wow people suck so much sometimes. One chimp in particular was raised in a home like a human infant, learned modified ASL. When the study ended he was sent to medical testing... the man who raised him visited only once, during which the chimp was shivering with excitement and kept signing to get the keys and lets go home.

The one I use came from Amazon. It is called "Petsfit Bird Carrier," and I highly recommend it.

It has less options, and is therefore less expensive, than the Ceiltei Pak-o-bird. (Which is definitely the best choice if you can afford it!) But the Petsfit bird carrier is a Great carrier and works really well. My Sunny loves it. We go all sorts of places with it. It has great ventilation and can be covered or uncovered separately on 3 sides.

It could certainly hold a bird much larger than a conure, and also my two budgies travel in it quite happily. (I do not usually put all-three birds in together, though, except for short periods.) (Certainly could Not hold a macaw, though!)

There are some bird-backpacks out there that are like a big plastic bubble-type thing. I would recommend against them, as too much chance of overheating with the sunlight, and too much feeling of exposure for the bird.

Seriously considering a Pak-o-Bird or similar. Can they be comfortably used with carrier mounted forward on the chest? We have a serious coyote problem with occasional "grab and snatch" attacks from the rear against small dogs. My concern is they may attempt similar with a bird strapped to backside. I frequently see coyotes while walking or running but have nothing desired and they rarely attack solo humans. My hunch is they would be less likely to approach from the front, and at least I'd have early warning.

I think the Ceiltei Pak-o-Bird might some sort of forward-carry option. They definitely have an Atop-the-Shoulder option.

Regarding the Petsfit Bird Carrier, I often carry it by the long shoulder strap in the Cross-Body style, so that she is sitting in front of me looking forward. (The disadvantage is, it puts the carrier at a slight angle; however she does not seem to mind too much.) Pak-o-Bird's also have shoulder strap, so cross-body would surely work with them also.

I like to place the backpack on a walker and push her around like that in good weather. No concerns about coyotes that way! (Nor turkeys neither, which we see here a little more often than coyotes, nor even hawks or eagles.)

I hope I'm not too late in giving my 2 cents!

I saw Scott's question and zeroed in on it, so I want to share my experience having had a Celltei pak-o-bird for Boomer from 2013 to 2015.

Can it be worn safely in the front? For me, no. The top juts out and with the stiff material, it was uncomfortable on my neck and chin. Further, it is more rocky/unstable for the bird versus having it hang from your back.

I liked the pak for the 1st year. Very convenient and not too shabby looking. But after the 1st year, maybe less, the front stainless steel mesh started caving in big time. So that it was taking up room in Boomer's perch area. Then the walls and the roof started caving in. Then the back and bottom started warping. I got the size small so you'd think it would hold its shape more but the material is heavy canvass + flexible plastic inside corners. The structure is not strong enough to hold its shape after a few months to a year.

By 2016 it was unusable. It just sat in my closet where it started a colony of weird insects until I threw it out. It's easy enough to wipe down but impossible to do a deep clean without ruining it. I took care of it by putting down extra towels to catch poops, but with the food and Boomer preferring to stay at the bottom instead of his perch, things got messy inside especially on longer walks.

That's yet another thing. Boomer would perch on it when we're stationary but the walking motion was uncomfortable for him to stay on the perch so he'd hang out at the bottom with the poo-poos. I thought maybe walking was okay because it would mimic the sway of branches in the wind, but that was not our experience.

For the high price, I expected many years of use. I used mine maybe 2x to 3x every other month for a year until it became uncomfortable for Boomer. Hopefully another manufacturer offers an option. I don't see comparable ones in Amazon, albeit last time I checked was 8 months ago. Without competition, I don't see Celltei wanting to improve their product or lower their cost.

BoomBoom, shame you tossed it. Celti would have made everything right. For awhile, they were experimenting with the design and materials, so maybe you had an earlier one? I;ve had mine for 4 years or so, use it often and have none of the issues you mentioned. I dont know what you consider deep cleaning, but the whole thing unzips and unzips until you can lay it all flat on the kitchen table. Attack it with what you will.

The last time Al and Salty came to visit he had his pak-o-fid and since I was (and still am ) thinking of getting one for Amy I took a good look at it and was impressed. I contacted the maker and they were very helpful,suggesting the medium size for an Amazon and I believe they even have a one year warranty and superb costumer service. Since Amy loves adventures and I could use the exercise I'm still thinking about it ( come on stimulus check! )

I might add that they are made in Brooklyn, NY, USA - I went to the factory to see mine actually being made. A lunch hour well spent ( well more like 1-2/3 lunch hour).
