Birthday parrot FAILURE!

I say leave this up....just so we can refer back to it in the future on how bad someone can be in the future.

I think it's important to recognize that we all started someplace.

Look at how many of us that have rescued parrots that never left a teeny cage that wasn't even cleaned - i suspect that's way more common than we realize. Yes it's terrible because we know how advanced these species really are, but there are soooo many people out there that just don't know this yet.

I give credit to the OP for coming here and reading and asking questions. It's not easy to keep trying and learning when the idea you had about how parrots are as pets is so different from everyone answering, but they're still here.

When I was visiting Cotton every few days at the rescue, I saw at least 15 people every day come in and ask "which one talks, and how much do they cost?"

There is a huge gap between people who have learned what being a good parrot owner means and people who have only ever heard of parrots being a cool thing to show off.

IMO there's a lot of room in the middle to keep trying to meet someone where they're at. ❤️

ETA that said, I do appreciate that we have a range from gentle to blunt on this forum, because I for one needed to hear things both ways to get it!!

If the OP is for real then it’s a prime example of why you never give a parrot as a gift.
Otherwise, then it needs to stand as educational how not to get baited into a made up argument.

I do agree.

But I suppose I can't help myself jumping in to topics that I think have a good chance of being searched for in Goog le by other prospective parrot owners in the future 🙃

First of all Petsmart has a 14 day guarantee and I can return the bird as it is in their CUSTOMER POLICY.

Second, a larger bird is going to be easier to tame. Small and tiny birds like parakeets are skittish because wind can easily blow them away.
No.
This is the same mistake people make with ponies, thinking they are easier to control than a full sized horse.

You end up with a pony that bites, kicks, and uses its clever mind to cause all sorts of mischief. And they HURT.

A larger bird is not easier to tame. They are, in fact, even more dangerous and difficult to work with because if you do not already know what you are doing, now you have an angry distrustful bird who is fully capable and WILLING to take your entire finger off, gouge out an eye, leave a nasty scar on your face requiring stitches, take a chunk out of your ear, or any other such damage as their massive, nut-cracking, bone-snapping, beaks can do.

A pissed off budgie is going to enact the same amount of anger out on you, but the physical limit of their smaller beak means surface skin damage and maybe light scarring, but they won't be able to snip an entire finger or part of your ear off if the mood so pleases them.
