I have a bonded pair of Green Cheeks. They came together bonded. One male, one female. I have no intention of babies so I'm doing everything I can to discourage it. However the female's behavior has me confused. Both are just over 5 months. If I remove one the other will become very upset, screaming and flapping around. The female I can handle as though she's a bit flighty/timid she's good with step up and loves a good scratch. The male is super aggressive. Both respond well to training.
He feeds her, grooms her, and they cuddle when napping. She seems to be friendly with him and groom him, but she bullies a bit. She'll take food out of his foot if she wants that instead, she just takes it and he doesn't fuss. She in no way tries blocking him at all though, they eat about the same amount. They usually sit next to one another eating. Share treats, share water and toys with no issues unless a high value item is there and she wants it. She grabs it and he won't take it back. I make sure he gets a good share though
I know what she's like. She will hord the good stuff lol.
When I go near the cage the male peeps at me and will vigorously rub his beak on the cage and try to bite. When he does this the female will come from no where and chase him off. Often she goes after his neck and feet and pushes him to the floor. She's never actually hurt him though, no blood or feathers even displaced. Dosen't chase him any other time. It's just when I'm there and he gets nasty.
So is she trying to protect me or him? If I reach toward him she doesn't care at all until he lunges or screams at me. Then she goes after him. She just started this about a month ago. Is this bullying or a bonded pair thing? I tried separating them before and the male began plucking so I don't want to do that again.
She's never aggressive with him other than the moments I'm there. Especially if she's getting her scratch and he gets close. She'll run him off. He moves away and then comes back lol. But he WILL bite me. And when he grabs he grinds and don't let go and I've tried everything to fix it. Needless to say he has become a well fed and cared for/spoiled show piece.
and if I remove him she screams and panics until she can touch him. The thing that sucks is that she kind of likes her time on the play stand but she won't calm until he's on there with her. Which means I need my gloves to grab him and pull him from the cage (not helping our bond I know) though usually if I leave the door open he tries following when I walk Off with her. Then he gives me the hairy eye while she plays with the toys. No amount of work has gotten is any closer. I've accepted he dislikes me but he's still my baby
