Budgie Rescue in Progress

I talked to the vet. He did an x-ray and exam told me that Cora doesn't have a fracture. He said she has a mass in that side of her abdominal cavity that's displacing her organs and is probably putting pressure on the vessels and nerves in her leg. There's nothing that can be done other than to give meloxicam once a day for pain and inflammation and keep her in safe, low stress environment that minimizes climbing. I've set up a bin for her with wide flat perches and no bars to climb while she hopefully recovers enough to go into a regular cage with Joey. Personally, I think she sprained or strained something but that wouldn't show on an xray and that's contributing to her lameness. He can't explain w

I really hate half A diagnosis
I'm sorry for you and her as you are doing your best and I know you care . I admire you and your dedication,
to the point I can't describe.
Bless you and her and I pray for the optimum outcome.

He can't really explain why her lameness came on so suddenly other than the "mass" may have coincidentally enlarged just enough to suddenly become symptomatic. Personally, knowing how she flailed around the room yesterday, I think she had a sprain or strain that in addition to the mass. As long as it's not a fracture I have more hope that she will recover enough with Melocam and rest. Were in our way to pick up Cora. I've already set up her bin and really hope she finds it comfortable.

Now I have two budgies that live in bins! Ive been taking Mariah out every morning and putting her on top of her old cage where they all hang out and put her back at night and if we leave the house for more than a couple hours and she's doing pretty well. She can fly some but if she ends up on the floor she doesnt have the strenghth to can't get back up. This all makes me think Mariah's problem may be related to something similar (a mass) that's pressing on her leg nerves causing partial lameness because their symptoms are so similar and both came on "suddenly". Who knows? I just try to give my budgies the best, most enjoyable life I can, whatever the cost.

Thanks, T.O.M. It's so stressful to see any of my birds suffering and not being able to do anything about it. I realize that diagnosing illnesses in tiny birds like budgies is imprecise at best and treatment is often a shot in the dark. The Fortunately, Mariah, my other bin budgie, has recovered from whatever her problem was enough to rejoin the others in the big cage last night and did fine. Cora is not used to me like Mariah is so she's scared, can still fly, and I'm not great at restraining squirming budgies, which makes medicating her daily very hard and I don't want add to her stress.
By the way, T.O.M., you look just like my husband in your avatar with the cockatoo!

Yikes sorry for the ups and downs! I'm just now catching up on little Cora's adventures. I hope you're right and the symptoms are from some kind of soft tissue injury and the mass goes back to "just being there" without impacting her life. 🤞🏼

Donna,
I feel soooo bad for both you and your Hubby:eek::ROFLMAO:

Hoping Cora feels better soon

Or Vets practice voodoo magic when people aren't looking, LOL!

Cora is set up in a bin and she seems to be doing better. She csn fly but still can't perch properly but tries. She's eating and moving around her bin trying to get up on the low perch stand in her bin but can't yet. Joey visits with her through the top grate and plastic sides. I'm so hoping she recovers enough to live a normal life.

Cora is all better now in her own cage! And guess what? She flew to me today and landed on me twice! She's a great little budgie! She's the green one and Joey is bending over in front.

Yayyyy! So glad to hear this! What a beautiful little budgie 🥰

It should give hope to people whose birds fly away that sometimes they do get rescued and find themselves in good new homes. I'm so thrilled its worked out like this because I wanted a female companion for Joey and didn't want to get a wild child smd have to start from scratch taming her. I got everything I hoped for with Cora. I think she's happy, too.

Yaaaay! Excellent news! :D

I need advice on Cora the escapee rescue budgie. I just started letting her out of of her cage to enjoy flying around my bedroom with Joey but it's really hard to get her back into her cage. She's comfortable with me around and had flow to me and landed a few times already. I put a bowl of seed on her door entrance and she sat on it and ate with Joey. Yesterday afternoon at 3pm I couldn't get her to go back in and didn't want to stress her out by grabbing her in a towel. I made sure there was no food outside her cage and left for work leaving her out with a small light on in the room. I thought she would go back in herself at sunset because she went into a strange cage herself to be voluntarily captured about 10 days ago. When I got home at 9:30pm she was still out perched on the curtain rod. I managed to get her back in.
Should I clip her wings enough that flying around very high up is more difficult and I can catch her more easily? I have a fractured foot and running around the room after a loose budgie is not good for my foot. I'm supposed to be no weight bearing at all but that's not really an option for me. I need to do to much to just lie around and I am terrible at using crutches. Advice please@

Yup. Snip snip time. She knows how to fly so no worries on stunting her. Just a bit of a trim while she learns the new routine and you heal.

Been there with the busted foot n not being able to really take it easy🤷🏼‍♀️ just do your best and don't feel guilty about putting your recovery as a priority. It's important. Can't pour from an empty cup.

We normally don't like wing-clipping, but I agree with bug_n_flock. You have to heal so you can take good care of everyone.

Sometimes it helps if I put some food and/or treats on a small plate, in the bottom of the cage. The birds are curious about the food being presented in a different way.
