Button- 3yo peach-faced lovebird (opaline turquoise ino)
Ava- 8yo Amazon hybrid (yellow-crowned x yellow-shouldered)
I feel like a mama with a new baby. SO many pictures. I adore Ava, & I’m so happy we decided to adopt her. I took some photos of her today. She’s such a beautiful bird. Bear with me with all the shared content the last couple of days! I figured I should probably start a continuous thread for my birds, like many of you have done. 🙈😆

Awesome pics so far, @nkrbkr, we certainly can't have too much cuteness on this forum! I look forward to follow Ava and Button's journeys along with you 💖

Agree we can't have too much cuteness. Her personality is apparent.

Yay, your own thread! Ava is beautiful.

I highly recommend creating a life story thread for your parrot. Salty's is going on 10 yrs now and its so cool to go back and read it every now and then. We forget so much of the day to day stuff!

That’s a great point…kind of like a combined journal/photo album. I’ll have to peruse Salty’s. I’m sure there are lots of nuggets of wisdom to be found. 😊

I’m not sure that Button agrees, but I’m definitely not feeling it today. View attachment 81242

Now how do you manage to drink that without Button trying to steal the tea or chew on the tea tag? 😂 Ona is obsessed with trying to get in my tea or coffee. The tea she wants to chew the bag and the string. The coffee she just wants to drink. Stinker. I often have to make her a cup of bird tea just to get her to leave me alone for a few mins!

Button is an adorable name btw.

Thank you. 🥰

He usually doesn’t bother it too much. Just chews on the tag here and there. He’s jumped on the rim of the mug a few times and gotten a little too nosy, but not often. Bird tea is not something I’ve tried with him yet, although it’s always sounded interesting. Is there one that you recommend?

Biodiversity Bird Blends. Great teas and forage mixes. Super nutritious stuff. China Prairie has good teas too.

For the first time tonight, Ava accepted scritches while sitting on Dad’s shoulder. They had a nice long scritch session earlier in the evening too. She adores him & gets so excited when he comes home from work. It’s very cute. Her previous owner was a male, & I don’t think she was really handled by any females for the three years he had her. No idea what her situation was like for the five years before that. Meanwhile, I get the begging noises, & head bobbing baby behavior. But hey, at least she likes me. I’m thankful for that. 😊

We developed a hand signal, unique, to ask Salty if he would like a scratch. Saves getting nipped if his mood has been misjudged. He rarely asks for one on his own. But he does enjoy a good long scratching session! Longest was around 40-45 min. He dont like them light tickle-y scratches either - he wants you to really dig in and will even push, hard, into your fingers!

Both Button and Ava prefer my husband’s scratches. I think it’s because he really does get in there. It’s very sweet to watch. He had never been around birds before these two, & they absolutely love him (& the feeling is mutual). He’s an animal whisperer, or as I like to call him, a Disney princess, with his flock of adoring critters. 😆

Sounds like me. My husband is jealous because all our animals, and usually any animal in general, prefers me 😂

Animals have always been a huge part of my life. I grew up riding and showing horses, having dogs and cats. I learned how to approach the stray cats on my street so I could pet and feed them. Now I’ve volunteer dog walked for 6 years and work with the behavior issue dogs. I love animals of any kind.

Yeah, he grew up on a ranch caring for animals, & volunteering at the humane society as a kid. So he’s definitely got a love and understanding of animals. I’ve never met a critter that doesn’t love him. It’s funny, because Button is most strongly bonded to me. He’s a Mama’s boy, & will come find me the second he comes out of his cage, but goes to Dad to get the good scritchies. lol

It was Ava’s 8th hatchday on Aug. 10, & her first one with us. We weren’t able to celebrate on the 10th, but are celebrating this evening. She got two types of bird bread that she loves, and a slice of banana (her favorite) for dinner. Button got some birthday cake to help celebrate too. 😊 Ava also got a new balsa toy that was met with a “Woo!” and some eye pins when I showed it to her. She’s purring happily while eating her cake. Here’s to many more hatchdays, sweet Ava! 🎉
