Cage Beware

Hello everyone,

I just thought I'd post a freaky accident that happened yesterday in my Franklin's cage.

His food and water dish are removed via a slide up door, yesterday morning I put fresh water in his dish slipped it through the side...like normal he tries to bath and dunk his head...we were getting ready to leave and my daughter walked up to see how long I was going to be and I said, Look at Frankie trying to bathe in his water...then we hear some commotion and she says...Mom, he's stuck!

Franklin had moved just exactly perfect to hook his leg band onto the slide part of the door (see example picture) of course when he discovered he was stuck he started to panic. I'm SOOOOOO glad we hadn't left yet I fear what may happened if I wasn't there, broken leg...or worse

Before we left, I immediately took some pliers and l clamped the hooks around tight to make a circle and now there is no way a freak accident like that could happen again.

I know many of us have cages with this style of slide up door...as a precaution make sure all the "hooks" are bent fully around. Because even though it might be a 1 in a million chance of this ever happening again..it did happen to us...I mean, who would have ever thought.

As another warning about those type of doors, I've heard them referred to as guillotine doors and that some birds have died from playing with the doors and getting their heads caught in them.

The cage I've got Pi in right now has doors like that so I invested in tiny locks for each door on her cage to keep her in and Courage out even when I'm gone.

Glad you were there OMG don't even go there..............

If only a there was a law, that every bird cage that is sold, comes with a safety warranty.
I know it will never be 100% bird proof, but safety measures can be taken.

Pi is a sun conure. I wanted a chattering lory but I couldn't afford the prices for one and then this little girl stole my heart so here we are. Your lorikeet is beautiful!

You are so welcome, Franklin is a yellow sided green cheek conure.

I've had birds quite a while and NEVER had something like this happen before, so I didn't even pay attention to the way the door was connected to the cage, never even saw it as a hazard...which is why I was compelled to post this.

I went to the pet store today, looking at all the cage styles...in particular noticing the construction in more detail...some are definitely better built then others, some had hooks like mine did before I fixed it, and some were manufactured bent all the way around.

Can someone tell me why you guys have leg bands on your Birds? I know here in Australia there are required on our native birds but not Conures. I thought Conures were native to South America.

In America I think it just depends where you get the bird. My grey doesn't have a leg band, She came from a breeder. My amazon, came from a pet store, his is red and some numbers on it. My ringneck was wild caught, and has a fancy leg band. I am sure they are used to identify the bird, but thats really the only reason that I can think of.

My conure came with a closed leg band from the breeder. It may be a Florida thing but I didn't look at it much.

I just like it for the security of if I ever do lose him, at least till I can get micro chipping.

A lot of people band their birds, I useto band my pigeons usually the year they were born, with a color code for that season so they didnt get mixed up with the other birds. I still have a string of unused bands that I never got to use.

Id assume that each place was diffrent, but its not hard to get bird bands for your birds if your breeding them.
