Cat bites

Hi,
So my little green cheeks conure jumped on my cat yesterday and it was so quick my cat caught him... I checked him and couldn't see any marks or anything . It was too late to go to the vet here so I waited, and this morning he was in a bad shape, couldn't eat and he seemed tired so obviously I went to the vet real quick.

She couldn't see any bites but gave him antibiotics (baydril) and pain killers ( Metacam) .. He started eating a few seeds and some fruits and drink but he seems sooo tired ... He just wants to cuddle and sleep and have difficulties staying awake...

The vet seems not to worried since he eats a bit but I can't help but being worried . Is it because he maybe couldn't sleep all night or you know the trip to the vet may had scared him or is it because he is fighting the probably infection?

What normally happens when they take painkillers or antibiotics? I'm so worried, he is my little baby and I can't imagine losing him ..

Firstly have you been to a Certified Avian Vet? Yes he is probably very poorly and wonder why the vet didnt keep him in?

It is important that he continues to eat and drink to survive this. Cats bury their poo, there is a fair chance that they carry faeces pathogens on their claws.

Did the vet not give any injections? It is going to take time to get oral medication up and working. Have you examined him for injuries under his feathers.

Why oh why were they both out in the same room?

To be fair, it's the only avian vet where I live ... She wasn't worried, she saw a lot of parrots going ok and I think keeping him would been worst cause he is such a baby , always on my shoulders so I don't know ...

No dont suppose she was, not her parrots is it?

The only things for you to do is keep him warm, hot water bottle in a towel. Keep up with fluids and food. If he dehydrates and loses too much his body will shut down.

Have you a syringe?

The only thing I worry about is your cat's saliva possibly getting into your bird's system. Cat and dog saliva can have lots of bacteria in it that can be toxic to smaller animals like birds and rodents.

I have two cats and two cockatiels. I'm also sitting here wondering why you had the cat out at the same time as the bird. When I have my birds out, the cats go in their room to stay and play until birds are back in their cage. Otherwise all it takes is one idea for the bird to get in its head that it wants to explore on the floor or investigate a soft kitty and with one swipe or chomp bird dead.

Please keep an eye on your conure and keep us updated.

My conure is never in his cage that's why ..believe me , now imma not leave them in the same room and yeah I'm sure it's probably his saliva .. that's why we have this antibiotic.. but still , he seems so tired .. He eats a bit more every time 30 minutes ..

But if he was really sick , would he still be able to eat ? Maybe it's the painkiller that makes him this tired ?

Hopefully the tiredness is just from his little body working extra hard to try and pass whatever is in it that's causing him to feel sick. I'll keep him in my thoughts, I'm sure with the antibiotics helping, he will perk back up once he feels better

Really, you dont think it could be the poor little thing's body trying hard to fight the bacteria introduced in the saliva? If he is with you still after 24 hours things hopefully will get better.

When birds get sick, they usually try to hide it and may show a range of symptoms, from not much change at all, to very sudden, abrupt changes in behavior. With your bid seeming sleepy, lethargic, lack of appetite, it's most likely the saliva from your cat got into your bird's system and his immune system is trying to fight off the infection. Antibiotics should help, but bird health can deteriorate so quickly, it could be 50/50 survival. Keeping your conure in my thoughts!

It sounds like he was tired before he was given any medication.
SO... my guess is he is suffering mostly from shock.

Sorry, you likely do not to hear this but cats and Parrots do not belong together. Period. It is a combination that eventually will result in the parrots death. No matter how careful you are, in the 30, 40, 50 or more years a parrot can live, at some point someone will forget or leave a door open or what ever. My opinion, shared by many. Most who loose a parrot like that drop off the message boards because they know they were warned and are too shamed to admit it. I hope your little conure lives thru this.

Few months ago My cats somehow got into my room while icey was out playing and sadly got swiped by the cat i managed to get the cats out without further injury to icey, but when i checked over her she was bleeding on her chest area i was in tears called emergency vets and i was told i could come in the morning as it happend at night before putting her to bed,
So i booked vets as an emergency appointment having to be squeased in she had an injection and we had to give her antibiotics & painkillers for a week. She acted as if nothing ever happend, loud, feisty, temper tantrums
Even after that whenever shes in her cage & the cats come near her she still tries to bite their paws & noses, hasnt lost her crazy streak at all (icey is just my very crazy bird lol)

The vet also told us that the bacteria in cats claws & mouth is deadly to birds if it gets into the bloodstream & after 24hours is when things go very south.

So please please please keep birdys & kittys seperate, cats are hunters and anything that moves they will think is prey and attack
Even If you think your doors are closed properly double even triple check there is no way they can open it !!!


Just be sure to keep her/him warm & monitor how much food & water having, hes its staying at the bottom of the cage move food & water bowls there for more easy access, but definitely keep birdy warm !!!

Thank you so much for your replies and yes I know cat and parrots don't get along ... it happened in seconds . I always , always look at him ... I regret so much. He jumped on the cat. The cat was sleeping and was frighning .

Tonight he groomed himself and started talking a bit again. He ate a lot and drank a lot too. I'm just hoping that means he is getting better ...

He even played with my earring. I might get my hopes up too fast but it looks like he is getting better .

Please send him good thoughts , I don't know what I'd do without him..

I'm sorry your baby is going through a difficult time. Regret is the by-product of hindsight, but try to be optimistic and give as much support as possible.

You mention visiting the only "avian vet," but is this person a certified avian vet? A world of difference, though the treatment protocol is likely antibiotics and pain meds. If he doesn't improve rapidly, basic blood work may be necessary to verify the presence of infection. Perhaps more potent antibiotics can be prescribed, with a front-loaded dose via injection?

Not really she was still loud, throwing her pots on the floor and screeching for attention but icey is very crazy & believes shes a dog lol

Maybe yours had a different reaction to the antibiotics & painkillers or is just worn out from the stress of the attack then being dragged to the vets, just keep an eye making sure hes drinking water & eating, keep him warm as they need extra warmth to recover from illnesses, he maybe will perk up after having some more rest ?
