cleaning a wound, peroxide?

I just got home from being gone for a few days and my husband was not able to get Amigo in to the house for 3 days and nights. He slept out in his hole in the tree at night, came in to eat and drink from his outdoor cage during the day. Wow! Was he glad to see me drive in!! (My husband, that is).

Amigo stalked my husband every step he took outside during the day, landed on his shoulder from behind the first day...freaked Tim out, he didn't know how to get Amigo off without getting bit. Well, he finally did get bit, just a little, on the ear.

Amigo has a scratch on the inside of his leg. Not bleeding but still, new and fresh. Should I clean it, and with what would you suggest? Thanks.

Please don't use peroxide. It stings like crazy and can actually do more damage. If anything, I would use a dilute betadine solution. If you don't have access to that, honestly I think it should be fine if you wash it with some water and keep an eye on it. It doesn't sound too severe from the way you described it, but if you're really worried about it I'd take him to your avian vet.

Thanks FutureDVM, how I noticed it was blood on his feathers in that area. It doesn't appear to be deep. I did wash it with water and do have betadine, will do that in the morning. Thank you so much for your response. I'll keep an eye on it and for sure to the vet we'll go if it doesn't start to heal properly.

Sounds good. When you do the betadine, just dilute it with water until it's the color of a dark iced tea.

Future vet is correct. Peroxide destroys healthy tissue along with the microorganisms.
Most bird emergency kits have betadine in it instead of peroxide.
