Dangit. Toe tapping returns

I am so sad to be writing this again. It has been 6 months since Jasper's last toe-tapping incident, and tonight when I got home there it was again.

Both feet are going/wings flipping. One foot is worse than the other. Poor guy. Breaks my heart each time it happens.

I have no idea what caused it. It had been so long since his last incident I had to check my calendar to see when it was.

The only thing I can think of diet wise is some little cherries I've been giving him every day for a week or two, I'd have to check when I bought them. I forget the kind...gold cherries? They have a little crunchy casing around them that needs to be removed first.

I hope he'll be ok in the morning. I had set up his smaller cage in my bedroom for the night but when I told him it was sleepy time he insisted on coming out (and wanted to sleep in his big cage). So I'll check on him through the night, just to be sure.

I hate toe tapping.

So sorry to hear that, and it's been so long. The poor guy, must be bad for him and terrible for you to have to watch him go through it. My fingers are crossed that it settles quickly.

Aw, Katie. I'm so sorry to hear that.

But at least it appears you have somewhere to start. Hopefully the golden cherries are the culprit, as you will then have some idea of what type of food tends to trigger the toe-tapping and wing-flipping.

Please keep us updated on how he is when he wakes.

Jasper was fine through the night, and this morning only one foot had slight toe tapping. By noon it had subsided completely. What a relief, still really upsetting to see it come back

Yeah. They're very diet sensitive birds, some are more sensitive than others.

Food diaries really do help... because you can get at the cause and effect quickly.

Yes unbelievably diet sensitive. I have had on and off toe tapping/wing flipping with my male ekkie(Yoshi)... It recently returned in a major way for about a week after being gone for a couple of months. And when he gets it, it is usually both tapping and flipping and builds up to be really heavy like every 2 seconds and can go all night(when he should be sleeping)

I am a sucker with his diet though as most of the food he loves are the ones which cause the problems. Namely corn, millet, rice, white potato. I go easy now on all those foods and I only give one type to him a day in a small amount(maybe a medium teaspoon).

Like other people have said in previous threads it seems that whatever is in those foods builds up in his system until he can no longer tolerate it. I once stopped all those foods for a good 2 weeks and even after I started feeding him those foods(and in relatively large amounts) it took a while for the toe tapping and wing flipping to return.

It's horrible when they get it cause there is no way they can sleep properly, especially with wing flipping and cause I feel so bad I find it hard to sleep when my little bird can't sleep.
