My grey Bugi is an interesting bird. He refuses to go to the toilet in his cage at all! He always waits until I get him and go on the floor or in his play gym, tree, etc. I can't let him out all the time, so if I come home in the evening and get him out, he will leave on the floor enormous amount of...you know. I never even saw these much!! His cage is always absolutely clean. What should I do? I can't let him out for all day!Thank you

Just tagging along as Fred is the same way. I have to put him on his perch right when I take him out or its a biggen right on the floor or down my shirt. I asked a simular question recently as well. Some people mentioned potty training but idonno.

 WOW, I"ve never heard of that before.

Could you take him out, and then, JUST when you know he's about to relieve himself you put him back in his cage and tell him "go potty". Keep repeating it until he goes, THEN reward heavily. :o

This is a natural thing for African grays to do, in the wild they never poo in the tree they roost(sleep) in. If they did all the predators would know which tree to climb at night! lol This can be a curse or a blessing, for one their cage will be much easier to clean, but on the other hand they are holding their poop which can lead to infections as well as needing to be there to take them out to relieve themselves.

Suprisingly Kenji doesn't mind pooping in his cage, but then he/she is 20 years old and probably followed instinct in the earlier years. I think for African grays who are really stubborn about this might really benefit from a separate sleeping cage.

As Copperarabian wrote it is natural behavior of those birds. Mine also tries to keep her poop until I come home and if she can't hold any more she comes close to the wall of the cage and makes a poo almost outside. So we end up with the poo all over the bars of the cage which is hard to clean cause it's like a cement:-)
