does this look like pbfd??

hi everyone! i recently saw this post about a lovebird that has a somewhat deformed beak and was hoping to purchase her as i doubt anyone would buy her!

but then it occurred to me that it could be pbfd although i would definitely be bring her for the pbfd test before coming home…i would like some of your opinions!!does it look like pbfd? please advice thank you

There's beak deformity too! In order to find out if it's PBFD you have to have them tested!

Not a sign of PBFD. Looks like lower jaw is misaligned or popped out of socket and upper beak grew inward.


This lovebird may require veterinary care for the rest of his or her life, and may need to see a vet every 2-3 months to get it's beak groomed.

Of course ONLY a AVIAN VET can tell for sure, but to me, it looks more like a birth defect. The bird is obviously filthy and in need of a good bath, but the feathers look to be in good condition besides the grunge on them. Poor feather quality is a major symptom of PBFD, but of course, isn't apparent in every bird.

I think it is a wise choice to have him looked over by a vet before bringing him home, but I'm happy to hear you are at least willing to look into giving this little sweetheart a good home

YEs, but from the poor thing's condition, it doesn't look like she's anywhere with someone with good bird knowledge on staff.

No opinion on the PBFD, just wanted to say bless you for noticing her, and caring!

oh I didn't know that people could be so ignorant… I guess not everyone does research on birds on a daily basis.

That's what's really great about being part of a bird "community". Everyone gets exposed to all aspects of living with birds.
Trouble is, there are so many people in the world keeping, breeding, trading, selling birds, without any regard to transmission of contagious diseases. That's how it keeps continuing, and unfortunately always will.

I never thought about that. Poor little thing, I hope she finds a good home. She looks like an absolute sweetheart and has such gentle eyes.

i'll most probably be getting her by next week i feel a bit better after reading that it it most probably not pbfd! fingers crossed test results come out negative!!

yeap where i am many are painfully unaware of the many diseases or illnesses and their symptoms. most avian vets also only recommend bloodwork or tests to be done as a last resort if the condition of the bird is too serious. probably a lot different from many other places but that is sadly how it works here.

once she's home with me we'll figure out her limitations and work from there!

also, thanks for the point about how she is probably unable to groom herself!!i did not think of that~ should i then get a buddy for her to help groom?or will that buddy end up bullying her?:O

It's good practice to test all new birds for at least pbfd and psittacosis before introducing them to any other birds anyway. A good avian vet will be able to tell you if anything can be done with the beak to help her cope a bit better.

Found out what her condition is called. It's known as "prognathism" aka "parrot beak".

Provided she tests disease-free, it may be a good idea to get her a buddy. I see she has cage mates at the store, so perhaps the staff have observed another bird she is housed with who has (no pun intended) taken her under it's wing

but the sad thing is….someone that just visited the store she's in told me that she's gone!! i hope they just separated her from the rest and nothing bad happened~~ gonna call em 1st thing tomorrow!
