I have psoriasis and my skin is a little unruly. I've been using olive oil lately and a friend recommended I add a little lavender essential oil to it.
I have a little green cheek conure who loves to sit on my shoulder and nibble or lick my ear. The oil is absorbed into my skin before I let him sit with me, but I don't know if the lavender leaves a residue and if it's safe for him. Does anyone know if I'm putting him at any sort of risk here?
Please understand that the use of 'essential oils' is a hot topic regarding its use with Humans whether applied topically or as a fume, or, etc.....
When it comes to Parrots, sadly its pretty much the same story. There is 'general' agreement that because of the design of the Air Sacks (Lungs) of Birds, they should not be exposed to the fumes.
Topical application on Parrots is really hotly debated! As a 'general' statement 'oils' are to be avoided for use on Parrots because the oil remains in the feathers and as the bird preens, it clearly gets into the Parrot though the Beak. The oil remains until properly removed with a soap like Dawn with no scent or bleach. Great care much be taken!
But your question is with regard to use on your skin and transference to your Parrot. If you elect to use them, avoid areas that your bird will come in contact with! Wash Your Hands. Sadly, this will effect the condition of the skin on your hands. So, if possible have someone else apply it for you.
Essential Oils is non-regulated. There is no assurance from one lot to another, let alone one manufacturer to another of the quality of the product and what is used in it. Regardless of what is stated by any number of sources, there is no over-sight. The product as a group falls under the statement: Let The Buy Be Wary!
For me, no way would let my Parrot come in contact with it!
