Well, I wasn't going to post this in front of the whole world, but oh well who cares! :30: I thought maybe someone might tell me it's gonna be okay. First I'll tell you what I was doing today, and then the unfortunate incident...

My husband and I are completely redoing my elderly dad's shower stall in his house this week. His house was built in 1965, and with the original shower stall, it was in dire need of repair from water damage. We're trying to save him money by not hiring an expensive contractor. It's hard work, and we are coming home saying "Ow my back! Oh my knees" ugh we are exhausted. We're not that old, but we know it would still be easier if we were younger! Anyway... We needed to go to Home Depot to get some supplies.

After we bought the sheet rock, I needed to drive (my dad's car) to the loading area to pick it up. Now, I really actually pride myself on being a good, agile, and careful driver..... when I'm paying attention.
As I was backing up, my mind was totally occupied with getting my car over to the right area, then thinking about the rest of the day, etc. Completely preoccupied. I DID SEE THE POLICE OFFICERS standing behind my car, so I did not run them down, however... I failed to see the police car parked right in my way!!! My only execuse is that besides my exhaustion, and my mind being preoccupied, my dad's SUV has a back window that is REALLY hard to see out of!!

The damage looks very mild. We have to see if the total damage cost to both cars combined is under $1,000, then the insurance on that car won't go up. UGH I hope. Though $1,000 doesn't go very far when your talking about car damage.

As bad as it is, I guess it was good that it was the police cause they knew right what to do, and everything was taken care of efficiently. I STILL CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE I DID THAT!!!:eek:

Moral here? When behind the wheel, get your mind off everything else and freakin' PAY ATTENTION!! (I know, you're saying 'duh'!)

I just tell myself... At least it wasn't any worse. Whew.

Oh dear... and a police car. I know where you're coming from when it comes to reversing, I'm Ok with just a car, but put a trailer behind the car and I look like a 17 y.o. newbie (I'm approaching 60 :))

I guess the biggest positive is that you didn't hit the coppers, that would have been really nasty (for you :)).

Yikes!! Smashing a police car must surely be the worst thing that can happen!!

Glad they were there to help though ;)

On the bright side you didn't have to wait for the cops! :54:

I get into accidents when I'm extremely tired....we all do crap like that at one time or another.....

Dear Julie: it is extremely ill-advised to back into a police car. Just sayin'...

Having said that, though, I feel so sorry for you! I can feel the exasperation in your post as I read it and I hope the whole thing irons out quickly and smoothly for you. There are just some days you'd do better to stay in bed, eh? :(

Hey Juliet these things happen to the best of us

It could have been worse a lot worse !!!!

At least they did not arrest you.

If Karen weren't out of town with her expedition I'd take a picture and send it to you. Three of the four corners are smashed in due to running into things she couldn't see (all wooden poles at parks,) which is why I refuse to drive the thing.

Once a couple years back I was so preoccupied while driving I flew right through a red light. I could have easily killed someone. Thankfully it was so early in the morning that no one was on the road so all I got was a ticket.

Hang in there, it sucks, but you'll pull through.

Oh no! And a police car to boot:( What did they say to you? I hope they were nice about it. I have also driven into things when I wasn't paying attention. I will keep my fingers crossed that the damage doesn't cost over the $1000.

Thanks guys. My dad is not happy about the car, but he is just going with the 'crap happens' attitude since what's done is done.
Thank you all for putting it into perspective for me too. Though humiliating, it really isn't THAT bad... Life will continue. When the shower stall is DONE we will be VERY happy :-)

Police car? Ouch. Scary scenario in my mind! I'm glad the officers on the scene seemed to be stand up guys, because that really could have gone much worse. Hoping right with you that the damage stays under $1000.
