When picking up medication for my cat at the local petsmart, my poor cabin fevered brain fell in love with a pair of parakeets. We have a loud and well lit house, we are NOT early risers, and I'm super crafty so I'd like to make the birds a cage cover. I have leftover fabric from shortening some room darkening curtains. It's very smooth and unlikely to fray and definitely works as a light blocker. Would this be ok to use or would air flow be a problem?

I use blackout curtains for cage covers for my sun conure (satin texture) and they work just fine. Eventually I plan to sit with my sewing machine & turn them into Actual cage covers -- but for the meantime I just kind of drape & clip them, and they work fine.

However regarding my parakeets, one likes darkness to sleep but the other Never wants to be covered. For them, I place a curtain on their cage so it just hangs over the top. Jefferson tends to then sleep on a perch below the bottom edge of the curtain, where he can keep an eye on me and the whole room, whilst Calliope sleeps higher up so she's in darkness of the curtain.

It took a few months after I got them for this preference to develop. So, just be attentive - and be ready to re-sew your cover if needed. :)

And of course -- be very careful with birdies with a cat in the house!!!!

The cats are the main reason I want them covered at night. Eventually they will get used to each other but for now the cats are super curious and the birds not yet trusting the cage to keep cats out.
