Rainbow Lorikeet
Hi everyone! I Just want to share my experiences of feeding and weaning my first baby rainbow lorikeet. Sorry about the long post.

I wasn't out to get an un-weaned lori, but i figured it would be a great experience and hey everyones gotta start and learn somehow!

anyway heres a photo of our little guy, he goes by the name Wendell.

My girlfriend and I got him when he was around 6 weeks old, he is now just about 10 weeks and fully weaned. I thought this may have been a daunting task, after lots of reading, contacting several breeders on info on how to feed and wean before we purchased him (so at least we knew what to do before we got him). feeding him from the spoon was a breeze, after 3 weeks of feeding him hand rearing formula and warm water he was eating his formula from the bowl on his own, from this we toke that as a sign that he is ready to wean. The next morning we went out got some lorikeet wet & dry mix, and a bunch of fruit. over the next few days we started mixing lori wet into his rearing formula, going 50/50 and less of his rearing mix and more of his wet mix each day eventually till it was just all wet mix, within 4 days he was completely eating wet mix on his own. The next day we put some dry mix in a separate bowl along with some water in another bowl next to his dry mix, he immediately climb his ladder and ate, after a few minutes he would be mixing his water and dry mix in his beak by himself! He is now eating fruit on his own, so after 5 days, i think its safe to say hes pretty much weaned. Might i say it was 100% easier than expected, was not difficult at all! I feel that he already has a strong bond with me and my partner, one that is going to last forever!

He is just starting to fly now, and has had much progress over 2 days since we noticed his first flight!

Hopefully you all enjoyed reading, and it helps some peoples decisions in getting a baby(normally i would have said don't get one unless they were weaned), or i have provided some great tips. :) :green2:

Here we all are! Happy as Larry :)
