Well, last night was his first night here in his new home. He did well I thought for the first night. He didn't sleep throughout the entire night though. He woke me up three times at least climbing around in his cage and then I woke up this morning at like 6 and moved and I guess I startled him and he fell off his perch. :( But he is back on and moving around again. Took him a minute cause he just sat there but he is good. Oh, and he started playing with his bell last night as well, which is another reason I woke up once. So I think for the first night, being so curious about his surroundings, he is doing quite well. Main concern... Potty training. lol. Just kidding.

lol at falling off perch, but he is sounding like his not so bothered by his surrounding just that you are there :) awww

Glad it went well, and you all survived the night.
When awaking he was just making observations, so many new things to see Wow
May I make a suggestion, remove the bell (when it's sleep time)

Rather let him know, it's sleep time and not play time. That little object will deprive you of sleep. He will soon catch on, he if I make a noise with the bell, I get their attention. Perhaps have a quiet toy, in the cage when it's sleep time.

Potty training yeah, take one day at a time. Before you know it, he will be potty trained, times goes by so quickly.

That actually is an awesome suggestion. I will definitely take the bell out at bed time. Thank you very much. And I know to take one day at a time. The potty training right now was a joke. As of right now, I am in all reality going to be sitting next to his cage reading him books and talking to him and stuff with the door open until he is comfortable enough to come up and approach me. I did hand him a bowl of food this morning and let him eat out of it and then made sure he followed me as to where I was putting it, in his little food bowl in the cage. He likes carrots more than apples from what I got this morning tossing the apple aside. That could be that all he had to eat were apple slices on the plane ride here though. He is absolutely gorgeous. I am so excited to have him as a part of my life. I will have plenty of stories for you guys coming up. :D And I am taking lot of pics today. He is already exploring and playing with his toys. :D Makes me so happy. Sorry for rambling on...

You may also want to put him in an area where there aren't anyone else sleeping or moving around. Birds like their own sleeping area because instinct tells them to wake up at the sign of any movement or the slightest noise. It keeps them alive in the wild. If you have a spare bedroom or even a livingroom or den where no one will be moving around with no undue noises will help him get a better nights sleep. Which will result in you having a more manageable bird.

No need to apologize for rambling on, that's why we joined the forum, we all ramble on.......

You will soon know all his likes and dislikes, and if not HE will let you now.

I actually have a night cage, in my bedroom where Mishka sleeps. It is the quietest room in our apartment. It is away from the guys playing the X box, the tv etc.

I hope it continues to go well for everyone and of course birdie. New noises and places can be frightening to our little feathered treasures.

He seems to be doing really well. Although the majority of his food is at the bottom of the cage. lol. My room is the quietest. I actually sleep in the finished basement in the open area where the living room/kitchen area is. i guess you could say its like a studio apartment. lol. I did put his cage near my bed though because I thought it would be good for him to see me more often. Is this not a good idea? I cover my bed with a sheet so he can't splatter food and water on my comforter. I really can't wait until he trusts me enough to let him take a shower though. lol, He is beautiful; the crap on his back from the carrier is not though. lol.

Any movement during the night can and will freak them out. I usually make a little noise before I enter my living room where all my birds are at. I like to leave a night light on for my birds, that is my preference. I've been doing this for years leaving on a night light. They don't freakout as easy, but when they do I wake up in the middle of the night to calm them down by turning on full lights and talk to all of them and I make sure no one is hurt from flopping in the cage or aviary. I would usually pet my too and macaw when they freakout, my petting seem to calm them down. It rarely happens but ever since I moved the tiels into the aviary(they freakout easy!) Its happened a little more but not too bad. Since sometimes is from the cats escaping into the living room area at night that's freaking them out. They are not allowed in there!!!

Rambling about your babies is expected here!!!! He's so cute!!!

Your movement during the night is probably what scared him. I would suggest covering the cage at night. You can bath him right now, put your hand in the cage to see if he will come to you. He should be pretty easy since he's so young. :)

Mishka's cage is less than 2 feet away from my bed. I leave fresh water for him, in case he gets thirsty. Have heard him drinking during the night.
He has sufficient food during the day, no midnight snacks for him.
I cover his cage with a sheet during summer and a blanket when it gets colder. Leaving a little open space for fresh air. He has got used to our routine, when the sheet covers his cage, he knows its beddie byes time.
I may sleep a little later over the weekends. I remove the sheet at about 5am (he's waking up time) I kiss him and say hello and climb back into bed. He says hello, and starts preening himself.
He has a chain hanging from the top, which he loves to bits. He continues to sucks it like a baby sucks a dummy, right up until I awake.

I will definitely give that a try. Giving him a shower that is. The biggest question though is, how do you refrain from freaking out when he bites? I got him to eat a snack out of my hand without having to coax him in to it. He walked up to me and took the snack from my hand. He then started nibbling at my fingers which I allowed, until he actually bit my finger. I left my hand there but pulled my finger out of his beak and said, "No bite." He does know his up and down command though so I will try and give him that shower today. If it comes down to it, I have some extra perches I am sure I can get him on and use the same method I used getting him out of the carrier. lol.

What you did was perfect, tell him no biting in a stern voice. I would tap my macaw on his beak when he tries to bite and tell him no biting. I would say his name willieeee...no biting! He would quit. Everytime before telling him sometime I would call him by his name but break it up to say the words separately until he's used to you. Cause he needs to learn single word commands. I talking to mine like people and they love it.... :)

When Mishka attempted to bite me, I made a fist, and held it gently, just above his head saying uhh uhh, then adding sorry mommy. Now days when he does something wrong, I show him my fist, he lowers his head and says sorry mommy.

Nice, that is awesome. I am going to have to use that one. Except I'll say sorry daddy. lol. Thanks you guys. I appreciate it.

Remember daddy has bigger hands than mommy, so be gently okay

Oh I definitely will be. lol. Nice. I will definitely never make him think I am going to hurt him. But I can see that working pretty well. Mishka has learned to associate your fist with him doing something wrong. I would like Skyler to have something that I can do that he can associate it with me telling him to stop. That would be pretty awesome.

Good luck, keep us updated with his progress

Tonight, Skyler put himself to sleep. We played after work for quite awhile, and I think I wore him out. Its 650 right now and he went back to his cage, had a light snack, and then listened to music for a little bit. I ran up stairs to see what was up with dinner and went back down stairs to sit by him again. He was out. I covered his cage shut the lights off. He is really learning very quickly. I've had great progress with him, and I am so proud and happy.

That's great to hear!!!! He's a quick learner!!! :)
