Hi there to all.
I've been reading this forum quite regularly over the last 2 days.
I acquired my IRN 2 days ago. He's 14 months old and quite tame. A friend had him from 2 months old and was unable to keep him so I offered to take him.
I'm looking for general advice regarding care and playtime.
I'm not too sure how to post photos but would love to share my setup and get your thoughts.

Any and all advice will be appreciated.
Thanks

hello and welcome!
I personally never owned a IRN so hopefully some other members with IRN experience will hop in..
for now ill just give general bird info
firstly ill start with the cage
how much time is he out of the cage?
if its only a sleeping cage i think its fine but of he gets locked in there alot i recommend a larger cage
a thread about bird cages..
other then that the set up is great!
i also see when wing is much shorter then the other..
what happened there?
is he clipped in one wing?
if so that is extremley dangerous for the bird
would recommand more shreddung toys..
the do it yourself forum is great!
has lots of DIY bird toys ideas!
whats his diet?
also how old is he and whats his name?
very pretty birb!

The cage is only closed from 9PM till around 7 AM.
He's allowed out the rest of the time.

I actually didn't notice one wing being shorter than the other. Will definitely enquire about it from the previous owner, though I was told that both wings were clipped the day I picked him up

Diet:
Thus far I've done this daily:

1 bowl water
1 bowl of storebought parrot mix with sunflower seeds
1 bowl of carrot pieces

in the secoend photo you can see how one barley has any primary flight feathers
i would advice against clipping if you do want to keep him clipped..

Now that you pointed out, I kind of notice it.
I've noticed that he is extremely afraid to take flight for even a short distance, like between the cage and the playstand.
Not sure if this has anything to do with it

yikes..
sunflower seeds big no no
they can cause lots of health issues
i would recommand makig chop and converting him to a pellet diet
pellets i recommand are harrsions TOPs and roundybush
if none dliver to your country..
harrsions are in amazon
im pretty sure roundybush are too..
this thread will help with diet

this is a great thread for chop recpies

clipping makes a bird scared of flight after crashing alot
it makes bird less confident and very scared
birds have two reactions to scary stuff:
fight or flight!
removing their abillity to fly will lead them to "fight"
which means:
biting
lunging
and sme other unwanted bheaviours such as screaming and demanding
great video on clipping..

Hi there all.

So when I brought my little baby home, I was home alone for 3 days.
However, yesterday my wife and 2 small kids came back home and naturally he was tense and scared of them. Infact he flew off his perch and playstand a few times, and my wife had to struggle to get him back up.

However, he was still very warm and friendly to me. He came to me as normal and allowed me to tickle his head and under his beak as well.

My question is:
At times he will playfully nip me but not bite, and allow me to pet him.
However at other time he gets very aggressive and actually lunges at my fingers and bites hard!
Is it something im doing that may be scaring him? Should I maybe leave him alone when he does this and not try to play with him?

welcome! Congratulations on your new birdie!!!!!!

Listen to your birds body language, allowing them to refuse a petting when they want. Some times a hand coming toward them can temporarily spook them.
Feed treats by hand every time you say hi. This really helps them like hands. Like just walk over and hand them a treat and say hi several times a day .

Lots of veggies from the parrot safe list plus leafy lettuce in addition to your diet. Bell pepper, red chili pepper are usually well loved and have lots of vitamin A, all the peppers even the hot ones are ok to feed. Peas and green beans, Swiss chard and romaine lettuce are aldo often big hits. Cooked sweet potatoes several warm lots if good vitamin and liked. There is plenty on diet here do read up!

Mine love edemame. I usually buy it frozen because otherwise it won’t last. Trader Joe’s has better ones than Albertsons.

Tillie in the picture is a yellow shouldered Amazon, in the wild, only seen in Venezuela or an island close to Venezuela.
