Hey everyone,

When I got Boswell from the pet store, his wings were already clipped. I really want to allow him to fly in the house, and eventually (long down the road) use a flight harness with him outside. Boswell is nearly 7 months old. When I first got him, he walked and hopped. Over time, he started fluttering from his desk perch onto my shoulder. Then, yesterday, he managed to flutter from his perch across the room onto my shirt. Point is, Bozzy and I both want him to be able to fly, but I'm not sure what sort of time frame would be normal for his flights to come back in. I have read some information about molting, but I am not entirely understanding the concept. Any insight for me?

Thanks,
Randy & Boswell:rainbow1:

He should be either starting into his first molt or he will be in the next few months.....when he starts getting little spiky feathers, it won't be long before he gets his new wings in.

When he starts to lose down feathers, body feathers and flights, he will be molting. You should not see any signs of bald areas on him.

I've had my new conure for just shy of 4 months and she's been molting for almost that entire time. Sometimes she'd lose only 2 flight feathers a month, other times she might have lost 6 feathers. She's got under half grown in and more to lose but she's got enough now that she can fly, with some difficulty.

Boswell could start molting any time now or might not molt for several months.

Rosie and Kenji loose their flight feathers very slowly, it took well over a year for Rosie to completly molt out all her clipped feathers. But then my friends cockatiel may do a complete wing molt in only a few months.
