Congo African Grey: Jenga
Many months ago I bought plane tickets to go home to Ohio (from Chicago) for Thanksgiving. Its a 1 hour flight, NOT BAD!

I was thinking about bringing Jenga home with me to visit. I could have friends watch her, and I'm sure she'd be fine, but I just know that from the minute I bring her home I'm going to want to have her with me as much as possible. That being said, I was thinking about bringing her back to Ohio with me for the holidays....

By the time thanksgiving rolls around I will have only had her one month. Part of me is conflicted about leaving her here - we won't have been together very long so I don't want her to think that she's been abandoned again (she's a rescue) but the other half of me says "yeah maybe, but you will be back and since you'll have only had a month together, maybe traveling will be pushing it".

Thoughts? Has anyone ever flown with a bird? By the time its all said and done she'd have to be in her carrier probably 4 hours total (to the airport, fly home, then to my folks place) and covered in poop lol but everything is washable!

I wouldn't subject a bird to the whims of the airlines if I didn't need to.

Not unless they let you take the bird in as a carry on item... very few airlines do.

Yes, she would be carry on and could sit in her crate on my lap or under my seat.

If she had to go beneath deck then no I wouldn't do that! Sorry, should have clarified.

Some things to consider.... how long will you be staying in Ohio? What are the airlines rules for traveling with pets? Do you have a cage at home for her? Or can you bring along a collapsible cage for her? Will your family be ok with her around? People with asthma or those sensitive to dust could have problems with a grey's dander.

Jayde came to me from Ohio and she required a health certificate within 10 days of her flight out of Ohio. We thought she was going to fly through Chicago, but she went through Dallas instead. Airlines may require a health certificate prior to being allowed on the plane. Some require health certificates if animals are traveling in cargo but not as a carry on.

Just some things to consider.... and you'll need to know this before you fly out there so there wont be any complications on the way there or on the way back. I do believe the health certificates are relatively cheap, but you may be charged for an office visit to get one.

I don't know how much this has changed since I have flown with my Illiger's macaw but what I had to do was make a reservation for the parrot to fly IN the cabin with me. I had to pay I believe 85 dollars to be able to take him on the plane with me. He had to be in a airplane approved carrier and mine did fit under the seat.

I took a blanket and put it on the floor and put his carrier on top. I took another blanket and wrapped the carrier. It keep the "airplane draft" off of him and the blanket underneath him kept the vibrations down.

Of course after they were air born and brought around food I put Diego on my chest under a blanket and fed him. The little freak poked his head out of the blanket and said "HIIIIIIIIII" to the lady sitting next to me. I shoved him back under the blanket like nothing happened. I am sure that lady thought she was going crazy. LOL

I would NOT advise taking the bird out at ALL. Don't follow my stupidity. TSA will probably make you take bird out of carrier so they can run carrier though the X-Ray while you walk though the metal detector with your parrot. Good luck with that. Diego got his head suck in my cleavage in my bra and I had trouble getting him out and he screamed like a woman.

Noble, I laughed very loudly on the bus reading your post LOL

Folks are fine with her, she's their grandfid! They do have a cage for her and I could afford to bring her on the airline with me...all that is good. I'm worried about it being stressful for her (she currently chews her feathers due to her previous home) / someone trying to take her from me.

I'll call the airline and feel it out a bit more - thanks guys!

If it was me I would take my baby with my. I am sure it would cause her more stress to be away from you then in a carrier with. We take Rory with us when we go out of town and he does just fine. We have never flown but he has done a 6 hour car ride. Good luck!!!
