Gilbert Oliver, Blue Crown Conure; Georgie, Sun Conure (2/8/01-8/8/12) RIP little girl; Percy, budgie 1993-1999. RIP Pepito-spanish timbrado canary
Today i had a few errands and was out, then started cleaning when i got home, basically 'ignoring' Gilbert. I heard him really chattering and making happy squawking sounds, really hamming it up for my attention....when suddenly i heard, very clearly, "YOU'RE A GOOD BOY!!!"
I was thrilled. I dropped what i was doing and ran to him, repeating "you're a good boy!" about 10 times and then brought him in the kitchen with me while i clean. He has been calm and quiet ever since, LOL. I think he was really giving it his best shot to get my attention. It was so cute. Made me so happy.

Yes. I was so thrilled that then he was thrilled and pinning his eyes, making kiss sounds, LOL

That is such a great moment when they speak. Often, a birds first words will be when they are alone. Some birds become "closet talkers", and usually talk when nobody is in sight. What a thrill it must have been.

He sounds like he will be a talkative little bird!

Aw, congrats!

Leonard did that last week. I had been out for more of the day than usual and when I finally got home, took him out and was greeted with the canary-wing version of "hi leonard"... which, is mostly buzzing, but whatever! It's exciting! And it's funny how they respond to our 'neglect'. So far my OMGOMGOMG HI LEONARD GOOD BIRD has not made him more apt to say anything when prompted, but I hope it works for you two!

Those first words are the most precious ones you will ever hear.
Keep talking and interacting with him the way you are, soon your will have a live chatterbox keeping you entertained all day.

Thanks for sharing

Isn't it exciting? My CAG also started to say a word or too this month, made me also very happy.

That's great to hear
What words were said?

:grey:

Oh, thanks:-) She says "hello", "good morning" and "how are you":-)
The last one is not very understandable, but I think she is getting there. Hope one day she'll get as good as your genius Mishka!!!

I know when i had Percy, my budgie and first bird, i was so uneducated and uninformed about birds. Imagine my complete shock that he was a huge chatterbox when i didn't even know budgies could talk? hahaha That was AMAZING to me back then. Gilbert is quite chattery but often just bird chatter, not usually things that are human words (except "hello....hello.....hello"). So that clear "you're a good boy" was really precious. :)

That is awesome for new words from such a young one

I reckon if anyone spoke to their birds, as much as I speak to Mishka their birds would all be geniuses honestly.

I think that both you and Mishka do great job! I read Irene Peperberg's book, her Alex was very talented while her next two CAG were a little bit less gifted. So it somehow depends on bird too. Anyways as you advised tome once I keep talking to Tos'ka as much as I can:-)

You are so correct saying it also depends on the bird.

I am so fortunate that Mishka is a great learner, whether he is playing or eating HE IS ALWAYS ALWAYS TALKING.

That's indeed quite remarkable.
Do you teach him to talk or did he pick up word by himself?

Thanks ......

All our birds are the best, each in their own unique way
