Parrots
Azure - Blue and Gold Macaw
HIya! I know that birds are fussy when it comes to food. I wanted to share what I make for my bird, Azure, about once a month or so. It is like a vegetable stew, but we call it goo because we never know what is going to end up going into it. It is vegan and salt free!

Base ingredients:
Tomatoes
Zucchini
Yellow squash
Frozen pea, carrot, and corn mix
Red/orange/yellow peppers

Extras
Frozen Mexican vegetable mix instead of or in addition to the basic mix above
Jalapeno or other hot peppers
sweet potato or other hard squash
onion
additional corn, frozen or fresh
potato
rinsed canned beans (we use, red, white and black beans)
Whatever veggies you wish!

My don't list is broccoli. It completely takes over the flavors and personally, I dislike the smell.

I thick slice all vegetables that need it, lightly spray with canola oil and then roast under the broiler. I then chop everything into biggish bites and cook together until everything is mixed. I will add garlic and onion powder also oregano and black and/or white pepper.

Yes, there is a lot of flavor and this is perfect for vegan/vegetarians. I will mix with whatever carbs we are having for dinner before they are flavored. She'll get a half of a grape or some other fruit for dessert. Most of the time she will eat what she wants and leaves the rest. That is ok with us as long as she eats something healthy. I freeze in small containers and take one out as needed. I only heat it up a bit in the microwave for about 30 seconds.

It sounds delicious but I thought we couldn't give onions and garlic to birds.
I have heard to be cautious. We have a multi-cultural family and onion and garlic are mainstays. She doesn't get everything we eat because of fat and salt, but she gets plenty of Southern/Mexican/Italian/Chinese food and she has been ok. Follow the Doc's orders in all cases of course! and you can always leave them out or replace them with something else that is yummy.

A parrots diet is of course up to the owner, however some foods have been shown to not be compatible with their (the parrots) digestive system. Onions, garlic and yes potatoes in their diet, in small amounts will not kill them outright, but do challenge their digestive systems. Over an extended period of exposure, this is where damage can occur. Avian nutritional needs and functions are still not 100% well understood, but I like to err on the side of caution.

I;d like to see the inclusion of more leafy green veggies into this mix, and limit the beans. I also make batches of chop for Salty, last one had 21+ ingredients, and freeze small baggies of it for later use. When we zap it, it has a lot of excess water in it, so we crumble up a few Nutraberries and mix in it, to absorb the water. I shoot it with a temperature gun and around 100deg F is Salty's favorite temperature.

When my chop is too watery I put into a strainer, run some warm water to rinse it quickly and warm it up. Then I take a metal ladle and squeeze out the excess water, absorbing it with paper towels. Then it's not too soggy to give to my birds.
I've been mixing sprouted budgie seed wirh it right before serving. I bought one of those sprouting starter kits from Sprout People.

Adding a nutriberey to absorb the juices keeps more of the nutrition in. Rinsing removes a lot of what's water soluble. Cooking and freezing already take some, so I'd go with the nutriberey method to keep as much of what's left as possible.

As for garlic, onion, etc etc in the diet? Freedom would end me in my sleep if I decided she could never have spaghetti pizza lasagna etc ever again. Those are her FAVORITES. doesn't drop even a single SPECK and she licks the bowl clean. Not an often addition to the diet, but a highly favored one for sure

I know I can't live with all the diet restrictions my Drs try to impose.
If I did I'd be living on air and water. Then they would tell me not to breathe the air or drink the water because it's polluted!
Everybody needs a little good eats from time to time.

Otherwise they are not living, just existing
