I'll second the F10SC as a disinfectant...No, it's not "natural", but it's so safe and effective that it is now being used regularly as a "medication" for Upper Respiratory Infections, and is given by Nebulization to birds, reptiles, amphibians, rodents, etc. with URI infections and Pneumonia! Works as well if not better than any Nebulized prescription antibiotic!!! So yeah, it's great stuff all the way around.
As far as "Foot Toys" go, the plastic balls as already mentioned are good; I always look at the rodent/ferret toy sections for Foot-Toys for the birds, and they love them. All of the little wooden "chew toys" meant for ferrets, rabbits, rats, etc. to chew on make awesome foot-toys for the birds.
The other great thing to use as foot-toys on the bottom of the cage, depending on the size of your bird, are things like wooden blocks, any small, plastic toys meant for young toddlers, etc. You have to get creative and hit the toy section of Walmart, and look in the toy aisle meant for young toddlers. All of the little wooden and plastic toys are great foot-toys...i bought a set of wooden alphabet blocks at the Dollar Tree and both my Green Cheek and my Senegal will lay on their backs with the blocks in their feet...I also bought my Senegal a little rubber ducky at Walmart in the baby bath section and he loves it, throws it all over the bottom of his cage. And my Quaker and my Budgies love these little chew toys meant for guinea pigs and ferrets that I bought at Walmart I believe...They came in a pack of 4, one looks like a hamburger, one like a hotdog, etc., and they are made entirely of safe wood and materials like hemp/jute. She loves them all, and the Budgies spend hours chewing them...
I don't like the poop either, though both my Green Cheek's cage and my Quaker's cage are the extra-large, double-tall Vision cages that have the bottom foot surrounded in acrylic plastic, and the way they are set-up is so that their food dishes are actually meant to be right on the bottom of the cage on either end (I don't put their food down there, they each have stainless bowls clamped-on up towards the middle/top)...But the way the cages are set-up, the grates are large and it's made so that the poop actually lands down on the very bottom, so the actual bottom grates are completely clean...My Senegal has a normal cage, and it's a lot of cleaning every day, though he tends to only go in one place from one perch and that's it, so it's not a lot of cleaning at all, it's all in one place, so I don't mind the foot-toys being down there...
It's all about getting creative as you walk through ANY store, no matter where it is...pet stores are always great because most of the stuff is going to be "safe" if it's meant to be chewed-on by any living animal, and I have to say that the "small animal" section of Petco has supplied a ton of my bird's toys/stands/play-areas, and they are much less expensive than the bird supplies for whatever reason...For example, I was looking for something new to add to the Budgies Aviary, and I found a really cool "bridge" made out of a bunch of natural wooden rods all attached to flexible metal rods, so you can bend the "bridge" to be flat, or humped so they can go underneath it, etc., and it cost $3...Lots of foot-toys in that section, and a ton of wooden things that you can make chewing/shredding toys out of..And my local Petco is connected to a Michael's Crafts right next door, so I'll go to Petco and buy a bunch of "parts" to make bird toys out of, then go next door to Michael's and find new ways of connecting them/building things out of them...
And Walmart, Target, TJ Maxx, Ross, etc. are great places because they all pretty large baby and toddler toy sections, so tons of little wooden blocks, wooden cars, animals, etc. to make chew toys out of, foot toys out of, etc. I am always looking for bird toys/things to put in their play areas/aviaries, so I'll go into Walmart to buy a new snow shovel and come out with $100 worth of pet toys and forget to get the shovel...happens all the time...
