so my boi likes to play in every inch of his cage including the bottom sometimes! right now ive just got parts of a pumkin for him to shred up but i dont always like using food as toys (not that hes eating much of it pfft).

any suggestions for what else i could add? hes not down there much, but when he is id like him to have something fun there!

I wouldn't encourage bottom-of-the-cage play, as this is where poop goes. If you put food down there, then your birds is inadvertently eating feces. If you must, at least pick toys that can be washed easily.

ey thats a pretty good point. we wipe it down every other day so ive never had an issue with that but i gechu. he drops his millet down there and likes to go and busts it up.

what do you use it wipe it?

hot water and vinegar. its a new cage so weve been keeping up with it hardcore. after years working in an aviary i remember how hard birb poop is to clean when it dries :/

Vinegar doesn't kill everything. f10 SC-the yellow kind- would be much better (if diluted appropriately).

oh the disinfectant? i think ive seen that around! i have been trying to shop around for a cleaner. i see natures miracle everywhere but i havent been a fan of that company for a while.

F10 SC isn't "natural" but it is totally safe when used as directed. It is heads above anything natural, and kills things like PBFD (when used at adequate dilutions and allowed to sit). You don't even have to rinse it once dry.

I don't have any toys on the bottom because of the poop issue that was mentioned, but when I can't be bothered and want to keep the bird busy, I throw a big, dried chili pepper in there. Keeps her busy every time. I buy all kinds of different dried peppers from the organic whole foods store.

I don't keep much on the bottom of the cage because of the poop thing, but I do keep one toy on the bottom of my big guys' cages because they both go nuts for them, and that is a big baby rattle ball.

You can get them at Walmart for less than five bucks, and they are plastic so super easy to wash and disinfect. In fact, it could probably be thrown in the top rack of the dishwasher now that I'm thinking about it. If you're not like me and don't live with people who get weird about stuff like that anyway...

Anyway, the birds love them because they are bouncy, they rattle and make noise, and are fun to "kill". As a plus, I've found that letting them have balls on the bottom of their cages as opposed to other toys, they tend to roll to the edges of their cages out of the main "poop zones."

Brussel sprouts are another good toy.

She also likes to play with grapes, but I only give those once in a while as I don't want her to be a fat bird just for the sake of keeping her out of my hair. Literally.

oooh these are good suggestions! he definitely likes cat balls but thats more a supervised play toy since they can crack them pretty easy to get at the jingle ball. ive been thinking of giving him a rattle or spoon too lol.

man he loves grapes lol but we only use them as training treats since for him theyre a high value food and i know too many arent that great.

ill have to look into the f10 sc, i think walmart is in fact where ive seen it. thanks for the heads up!

I do not give a rodents behind about the poopsituation: if your cage is large enough they will avoid those aereas anyway.

African greys are (like too's, tiels etc.) species that will fourage extensively on the ground in the wild - so let them!
(The macaw is more of a treedweller and does not like the floor anyway)
Keeping those from the cagebottom is cutting them of from a large part of their natural instincts and behaviourpatterns.

I use layers and layers of paper, and remove the poop-piles (sleeping/resting perces) daily.

They love the patches of chipped (beach)wood, and dig through them for munchables, I put a doggy-drinking-bowl with marbles in there (some hidden munchies of course, no water) and everything I can think of... there may be some hard boiled egg there (with the shell) or half an apple, piece of cabbage etc. so they can really tear into it.
Chop is fun and all, tearing stuff apart they like a LOT better.

I have *never* seen a parrot eat poop or something poop-smeared. Once there is some fecal matter there ...they will not touch it.
(Unless there is absulutely nothing else to eat?)
Only if they get startled and maybe step in some by accident ..they will have to clean the feet. But it is their own (medically approved and found safe) waste- so no harm will come of it.

Grates are not good for parrotfeet, they love to be on the bottom of the cage - its natural behaviour, there is nothing there that will harm them... and it gives them extra enrichment-options. :)

I'll second the F10SC as a disinfectant...No, it's not "natural", but it's so safe and effective that it is now being used regularly as a "medication" for Upper Respiratory Infections, and is given by Nebulization to birds, reptiles, amphibians, rodents, etc. with URI infections and Pneumonia! Works as well if not better than any Nebulized prescription antibiotic!!! So yeah, it's great stuff all the way around.

As far as "Foot Toys" go, the plastic balls as already mentioned are good; I always look at the rodent/ferret toy sections for Foot-Toys for the birds, and they love them. All of the little wooden "chew toys" meant for ferrets, rabbits, rats, etc. to chew on make awesome foot-toys for the birds.

The other great thing to use as foot-toys on the bottom of the cage, depending on the size of your bird, are things like wooden blocks, any small, plastic toys meant for young toddlers, etc. You have to get creative and hit the toy section of Walmart, and look in the toy aisle meant for young toddlers. All of the little wooden and plastic toys are great foot-toys...i bought a set of wooden alphabet blocks at the Dollar Tree and both my Green Cheek and my Senegal will lay on their backs with the blocks in their feet...I also bought my Senegal a little rubber ducky at Walmart in the baby bath section and he loves it, throws it all over the bottom of his cage. And my Quaker and my Budgies love these little chew toys meant for guinea pigs and ferrets that I bought at Walmart I believe...They came in a pack of 4, one looks like a hamburger, one like a hotdog, etc., and they are made entirely of safe wood and materials like hemp/jute. She loves them all, and the Budgies spend hours chewing them...

I don't like the poop either, though both my Green Cheek's cage and my Quaker's cage are the extra-large, double-tall Vision cages that have the bottom foot surrounded in acrylic plastic, and the way they are set-up is so that their food dishes are actually meant to be right on the bottom of the cage on either end (I don't put their food down there, they each have stainless bowls clamped-on up towards the middle/top)...But the way the cages are set-up, the grates are large and it's made so that the poop actually lands down on the very bottom, so the actual bottom grates are completely clean...My Senegal has a normal cage, and it's a lot of cleaning every day, though he tends to only go in one place from one perch and that's it, so it's not a lot of cleaning at all, it's all in one place, so I don't mind the foot-toys being down there...

It's all about getting creative as you walk through ANY store, no matter where it is...pet stores are always great because most of the stuff is going to be "safe" if it's meant to be chewed-on by any living animal, and I have to say that the "small animal" section of Petco has supplied a ton of my bird's toys/stands/play-areas, and they are much less expensive than the bird supplies for whatever reason...For example, I was looking for something new to add to the Budgies Aviary, and I found a really cool "bridge" made out of a bunch of natural wooden rods all attached to flexible metal rods, so you can bend the "bridge" to be flat, or humped so they can go underneath it, etc., and it cost $3...Lots of foot-toys in that section, and a ton of wooden things that you can make chewing/shredding toys out of..And my local Petco is connected to a Michael's Crafts right next door, so I'll go to Petco and buy a bunch of "parts" to make bird toys out of, then go next door to Michael's and find new ways of connecting them/building things out of them...

And Walmart, Target, TJ Maxx, Ross, etc. are great places because they all pretty large baby and toddler toy sections, so tons of little wooden blocks, wooden cars, animals, etc. to make chew toys out of, foot toys out of, etc. I am always looking for bird toys/things to put in their play areas/aviaries, so I'll go into Walmart to buy a new snow shovel and come out with $100 worth of pet toys and forget to get the shovel...happens all the time...

Actually- the CAVs here were not very enthousiatically about f10 -> there was someone at the lecture asking if she could put it in the nebubulizer and blast it in the parrotroom for a few hours at the time on a daily basis with the parrots present!
(some people just do not know when to stop desinfecting)
Overuse is never good.

I would love to have a cleaner that is in a wipe. I don't like using a spray that goes all over in addition to where you want the cleaner. I just spray down a paper towel with my mix and get to cleaning, but it would be nice to have something already in a wipe form.

If I keep those little cat balls, that have the bells inside on the bottom of the cage, my JoJo will grab one climb all the way up to the top of his cage and then drop it watching it bounces all the way down and then do this over and over!
He loves the bottom of his cage, runs back and forth, dragging his beak

of cousrse you can use your f10 in there ;)

a lot of these could definitely work out, especially the wooden blocks since he already loves those. caiques are normally canopy dwellers but they can and do frequent the lower levels of their habitat so i dont exactly want to discourage them. his cage is pretty spacious for a starter cage, he just happens to like to go to the bottom sometimes.

we have the same thing with larger grates so i dont really have issues with there being poop on the bards. ive been weighing using more shredding or something more natural on the bottom of the cage. i like having the ability to monitor his poop but at the same time he poops in a cup and on the floor pretty regularly so we usually have a front row seat to the poop show lol.

some of those toys he needs supervised play with because he chews plastic and has already gone through a few cat balls in his quest to get the jingly thing lol. but a trip to the store seems in order again! i've toyed with the idea of...making toys hehe especially after some of the ones i've seen online people have made!

i'm wondering if i'd be able to find this one cleaner we used to use where i worked. it was supposed to be a natural lemon based cleaner that we used on all of the bird supplies/perches/toys called lemon quat i believe?
