Got the cage last night.

Its plenty big.The cage he is now is 20x20x27.His new cage is 36x25x48.
So he will have quite a bit more room.I did have to do some damage control on the cage because it had a couple spots of rust but they are down under were the pan sits, so he cant get to it anyway.I just sanded it off and put some rustoleum on it..Otherwise the powder coat finish is in perfect shape..
I still have to get perches and stuff so it might be a day or two before he can actually go in it.

Yeah, fun decorating it(LOL).All I ordered was one shreddable toy and one rope perch.I can use branches so that will help..Its going to be a work in progress.Paco isnt used to doing anything but sitting there anyway so it might work out that he isnt overwhelmed with lots of stuff all at once.

Yes, he was in the same situation as Pete. His cage was even the same size as the one Pete came with. He probably doesn't know what toys are, like Pete didn't. I would start with only one or two things anyway, and he may be scared of them. You did get him a nice size cage though and he will probably be so happy!

It won't hurt though to keep his old cage as a good place to put birds when you take their cages outside for scrub down. That's what I'm doing with Pete's.

Paco is very lucky to have you looking after him properly! It's good that you are not overwhelming him with too much new stuff. How do you plan on introducing Paco to his new, luxurious cage?

I have no idea how Im going to introduce him to the cage.I have it sitting in the livingroom so he can look at it.And trust me he is looking at it, in a very suspicious way..
WOW even as I was typing this he flew over and landed on the top of the new cage...Cool, it may be easier then I thought
Actually its kinda sad because hes looking down into the cage, he is probably looking for his buddy(they had another amazon in a cage next to his).

I think your doing well with the cage introduction. Let him do it on his own. Does he have access into the new cage ? I would let him go in and out of it and then , one day feed him inside it and that will be that
I just put me Goffin in his new cage and he was fine, he eventually got used to everything enough to eat , drink and the rest took time...but if you have the opportunity and the time to take it slow with Paco , it couldnt hurt IMO.

Actually I think Paco doesnt like me much.He didnt step up for me once today.I had to call my 10 yo in to put him in his cage for bed.Pretty sad when he likes everyone else but me.

He is officially in his new cage now.And all he does is sit on his one perch that was in his original cage.
But last night when I was saying good night he did climb around on the cage but wont set foot on the new branches I have in there for perches.
I'll try and get a pic today.That old cage was pretty disgusting so I think I will throw it out.

Give him a while. He'll get used to it. Every time I add something new to FeeBee's cage he avoid that area for about a day. Then he slowly gets around to investigating on his own time.

And don't feel bad about your 10 yr. old. My boy is 8 years and that is who FeeBee has chosen to bond with the most. Unfortunately, my boy is still too scared to try to handle him, but he does let him in and out of the cage and also will hand him a nut through the bars. And yes, he was supposed to be mine. All I ever get is the 'stay away' body language and the occasional lunges when I get too close. But he is a bit more cuddley at night and will let me give him a scritch through the bars. I guess I'll just have to accept that.

Wierdly enough he bit my 10 yo today.Not really hard, didnt leave a mark.I think he moved too fast when he went to pick him up..Also PAco has been very nice to me today.Ive been trying to talk to him alot...Im waiting for the day he takes a treat from my hand.

Doris, just a word of advice and this is just my opinion only - but I wouldn't let your 10 yr. old pick him up by his cage. He may be starting to get cage territorial. I would either let him handle him only when Pacos in another room where he can't see his cage or make sure you tell your son what bird body language looks like and have him check it out before he makes a move to pick him up.

I know FeeBee used to let me take him right off his cage when he first came here and within 2 weeks he started getting very cage territorial. Now I can't put my hands anywhere near his cage without FeeBee trying to bite. He is still good if I can get him onto his playgym and move it to another room. Then he will step up with no problems.

I got bit a few times because FeeBee has this habit of putting a foot up in the air and holding it up like he wants to step up on you. He fooled me 3 times like that but now I've learned to read the eyes, feathers and head position that goes along with the foot up in the air.

It's almost as if he 'wants' to come, but then as I get closer he changes his mind and is still not trusting enough to actually do it.

Kelly I have been reading about Amazon aggression and its a bit scary.Paco was actually on a perch in the kitchen and I needed to put him up so I asked my son to do it.Bad idea, I do believe he just moved too fast though.So far he has let us know he didnt like something by squawking and opening his beak as if to bite.Thats enough to stop us.
But the fact that he only left a small pink mark I really think it was just a warning.I mean he could have really bit and left a bruise or worse blood.

So far I've only gotten some warning nips from Pete (for 3 days after taking him to the vet!). I have to say, I'm so glad I haven't experienced a bad bite from him. If that is all he ever does, I'll be very grateful!

Sorry Doris. I didn't mean to scare you that much. Just wanted you to always be aware that they do have a beak and will use it if they feel threatened.

If you really haven't had any trouble with Paco up to now, it certainly could have been that he just moved too quickly. Maybe Paco was half napping when your son came along. Or maybe he was just trying to tell him that he wanted to stay where he was.

As much as my zon is territorial, I truly believe that there are very few birds who are just plain mean and will attack for no reason. I don't think you need to clip his wings.

Again, sorry for scaring you. That was not my intention. I know I have taught my son exactly what to look for in body language with my bird. Just always want to be on the safe side.
