Mexican Green Conure
I adopted a 7 week old, hand fed Mexican green conure two recently. While it was being hand fed, is very very afraid of humans outside of feeding time. I think the previous owner fed the bird and basically ignored/stayed away from it otherwise. I’ve done a lot of research on helping birds bond with and become more comfortable with their humans, and a lot of what I’ve seen says to not touch them and let them get used to you on their own. However, I’m not sure how to do that with this bird because 1, it’s being hand fed which requires a certain level of handling, and 2, it’s a baby so I don’t want to miss any window of opportunity for socialization. Do you have any recommendations or tips?

I know ZERO about hand-feeding, but here is a thread that I have seen passed around here... hope it helps! It's a hard-to-read thread at times but still seems to have good info.

Good for you for reaching out.

I'm glad you and your baby are here. Stick with us.

And welcome to the Forums!

Thank you for welcoming us to the forum! All the birds I’ve owned growing up my mother and I hand fed and raised, so I’m confident that I’m feeding them right. I really appreciate you sharing the unweaned baby post anyways, because so so many scary things can happen to birds whose owners are unprepared and unexperienced with hand feeding. I should’ve specified that I have experience in the post! Little Marley is doing incredibly so far. They’ve become much more comfortable with constant gentle TLC, I’m excited for every new moment of comfort and trust between us!

Thank you for linking these threads! I realized Marley had a fear of hands, but specifically hands in their personal space (ie their cage). I’ve spent the last week using a dowel as a replacement for encouraging them to step up, and we’ve just started progressing to hands! I’ve learned that if I keep my hands as small and tightly fisted as possible aside from a finger for them to step onto, they’re much more receptive! I’m excited to see the daily progress we’re making together!

Y'all made my day!

when they're weaning, you might want to try treats such as slivered almonds or Nutri-berries as training treats. My guys will practically do backflips for them, LOL!

Congrats on the new baby! Can't wait to hear more about them! :D.
