Have Senegal. Have added Congo Grey. Q's.

Oscar the Grey is now willingly walking over to and to touching people without being enticed. Did it yesterday too but today is much less timid. Showing no signs of mistrust now. Getting much comfier.
I'm home all day (disability) so we have lots of time to talk.

The only advantage of a disability is that my birds are never lonely :)

Oscar is now asking to step up He looked at me and muttered steepuuuuuu and walked right up on my hand. He now steps up every single time I ask him. He is a genius. and be petted and had fun playing with a ball and cuddling on my chest feeling my face. He is coming along.

From this afternoon.
I ordered some (Roudy Bush is it called?) medium pellets and red palm oil online today laso.

How wonderful your grey settled in so nicely. I hope my RFM settles in as nicely as your grey did. Even with the horrible beginning for your grey your bird is happy to be with you. Love the pictures

It was the birdinese. I did a lot of mimicing his voices and body language and gave lots of bird waves (one wing/hand up and one foot up). Really though, he picked me. After the jerk at the pet store tried to grab him I closed my eyes and put my face to him and he kind of picked me and beak locked with me right there and cuddled me for the drive home. He wanted me to take him away from that place. Plus my Senegal is a people lover and watching it enjoy cuddling me made the congo warm up to me faster also. The congo purrs when petted now (copying the Sen) and always steps up. Eating well. Enjoyed a misting. All signs point to good at this point :D. He happily sits on people and tries to 'rezip their hair' and talks to them. He seems to enjoy each day more than the last.

He is fascinated by this ball for some reason:) so cute :). He likes sitting with me and playing games like this now :). Things are going really well. He bit and chipped my camera lens trying to figure out what it was. Note to self- no macro shots in future :D :D.

Just out of curiousity, I have the DNA and hatch date certificate for my Senegal because I bought him from a professional bird breeder (and the nicest lady in the world who raises the most loving parrots). I know his exact age and sex. With Oscar, no idea. We are guessing five or six months? He is not DNAd. I don't want to because I believe clipping the nail to draw blood would cause pain and fear to the bird and I don't care and would love a male/female equally. Any thoughts on this guys? How old and what sex do you think he is? I will also post this in the Grey section

Oscar is going to have to have the blood drawn at some point. When you take him/her to the vet for the well bird checkup the vet will have blood drawn to check levels and to have a baseline. You can order the DNA kit and wait until you take Oscar to the vet and when they draw the blood just have them take some for the kit. This way you are doing two things at once so don't have to get blood from your birdie twice.

16 years ago when I got Mihijo the breeders felt that he was a she. I wanted to know the sex of my bird right away so I could lock in on a name and also for future reference. (believe me you want to know the sex of your bird for future behavior ideas) I clipped his toenail and it bleed so I was able to collect the sample but even to this day Mihijo hates to have his nails filed or messed with. I never did this again.

Since then I got my Eclectus (obvious was a male) and I could only get a male Illiger's macaw (females were held back for breeding program across the US) and the breeder of my RFM will have them DNA checked before they are sold. So I do not have to mess with clipping toes for blood anyway. YEA!

Ocnoob...this photo scares me for Oscar's safety. Parrots love to play with their cages. I can see Oscar climbing that upturned "sunroof" door and pulling it down, choking himself against the other door. His body weight would only keep it closed.

I am not 100% familiar with those cages, but does it have a fastener to hold the door open? If not, I would use a stainless steel chain.

I know I am being the wet blanket around here, but my loss is still very fresh, and I see danger around every corner for our fids.

Your loss? I did not know you lost a parrot. I totally understand the loss of a loved one. Diego died this summer and I was totally in shock and I am still grieving the loss of my best friend. I miss so many things we did together.

As for the door on top how about keeping it closed and if you want him to play on the top of the cage he would be safer. If he wanted to go back inside cage to eat and drink he will just climb on in and do so. Close the door and lock it closed. Get him a playgym to play away from cage.

Locked, locked again, and ziptied. I found this out yesterday already. And thank you.
