I found your site while searching for help with my 6 y/o parakeet. it seems to be a female. Once a year it regurgitates food onto its perch and then gets it on her face , its reddish brown stuff that dries up on the perch and then he bird picks at it. She doesn't seam to mind it on her face. but when it covers her nostril is when i worry. what's going on? Thanks for the help, and welcome!

thanks, you got an answer to my post, about regurgitated food?

Hi welcome! Keep in mind, maybe members who have an answer for you haven't been able to see this and reply yet ;). Sometimes a little patience is needed.

It could just be a hormonal response? A reaction to something eaten? Hard to say for sure over the internet, especially if it's only once a year. My suggestion would be to take your little one to an avian vet (for an exam and tests if needed) if you haven't ever done so.

You can try getting some organic unfiltered ACV (apple cider vinegar), and make a solution of 1/2 tsp per 8oz of water. This acts as a natural probiotic for balancing the gut flora. However, if something is really "off" your bird will need to be seen by an avian specialist vet. Good luck! Keep us posted.

Hello, and welcome to the forum!

Your parakeet is 6 years old. Have you had her for all 6 years? If so, and she has routinely regurgitated once a year for most of that time, it's probably safe to assume that the regurgitation is a hormonal response.

Does it happen at the same time every year? And over what span of time does this period of regurgitation last? Does she shake her head from side to side when regurgitating? Or is it more of a head bob?

Julie is correct. You should definitely take your budgie to an avian vet if you have not already done so. Best to rule anything out. But as I said, given the regularity, my bet is that it's hormonal.

All is well and thanks for your opinions.
