Parrots
Amazon orange winged
7 years old named Frankie
Hi I became the owner of a 7 year old orange winged amazon parrot 2 day ago, he is lovely, he eats sunflower seed and dried fruit mix which he came with and fresh fruit but he want touch vegetables, he takes from my hand and i can scratch his head. So I am very pleased so far, I am concerned about his diet as people keep telling me he should have pellets, some say not to, so any advise be great and any tips for settling him in and getting used to us all. thank you :green:

Congrats to u and looking forward to see some pics of ur zon.
Reliable brand of pellets fits nicely into their staple diet. Not to forget, fresh fruits and veg are important too. Moderate amount of treats won't do them harm.
Have fun and cheers!

Hi Michelle, and welcome to the forum :) On a side note, you might want to moderate how much sunflowers he eats, they are kinda like cake and humans, it makes them fat and they are not especially healthy - but make good treats.

Hi Michelle, welcome to the forum :)

definitely pellets if you can switch him over, but it will take some time.

please post some pictures on here, we'd all love to see them

Welcome to the forums! Like others said, pellets are a good choice. They have a good balance of nutrients which is hard to reproduce. It's great that he eats some fresh food, though, as they are important, too. I would recommend that you try to slowly introduce pellets into his diet and work up to pellets being a main part if not the main part of his diet.

This link might help you with figuring out a balanced diet: Diet

Good luck and Congrats on your new parrot!

Welcome to the forum!!! :)

Welcome from another Michelle! ;)
Let your zon eat with you (from your plate, a salad of fresh goodies). They're quite keen on eating anything you're eating and seem to enjoy :). That way you may be able to convince him that fresh stuff is yummy.

Re: Hello

Hi
Thank you all for your good advice, I have uploaded two pics of Frankie but god knows where they have gone, I am as new to Forums as I am parrots. If you can see my pics I be interested to know if you think his nails and beak are ok or to long. I am going to try and source some pellets I have been told 3 brands are good, but having trouble finding where to get them from. I have learned very quick Frankie loves to eat, he comes down his cage to beg for food we are eating. I must say never really thought about being a bird owner but just after 3 days I love the little fella to bits. Thanks for advise given. :green:

NAAAWWW!!! Frankie is SUCH a pretty fellow!! :)

I'd say his beak could use a little work, yes, but his nails seem fine.

If you decide to have him "groomed", a dremel would work great on his beak. :)
