I am a cat owner. I have 2 Devon Rex cats, 1.5 yr and 1 yr. I am thinking about introducing a cockatiel to my clan and want advice...

I have seen many vids on youtube where they are playing and companions free in the environment. I want to hear any advice and experiences please.

Know this about my cats, they are very socialized to dogs and public situations because I am training them as pet therapists...

What do you think my odds are...

Hi, welcome! I don't know a huge amount about cats but my dogs (18months and 7 months) are both very good with my birds. I was very firm with them on ground rules from day one. The older if the two hunts and kills bunnies and the occasional bird on the farm too. I think it's very possible =)

Hi gutsy, welcome to the parrotforums. I do have a cat, and I have 4 birds. I've had birds longer than I did my cat, and I got my cat as a very young kitten, so young that I had to bottle feed him (he was rejected by his feral mother). So I was able to train him from a very young age, but still, I would not trust my cat with my birds if I'm not in the same room. Your cats are already adults, so I think it would be more difficult for you but as every bird is an individual, so is every cat.

heeeeey!! welcome!
ive never had cats, so i dont know much. most chances are that they will learn to be with each other after some time. but if you do get a cockatiel, NEVER leave them alone together, even if you trust them completley. they're animals, you never know what sudden ideas they may have. a lot of people on the forum have cats, so you'll have to wait for someone more experienced than me!

Hi! I have a tiel and two cats also but I wouldn't allow them to play together thought they did have some close encounters since Oz became flighted... Just yesterday he pooped on the cat xD

There was a terrifying (for me) occasion where he landed in front of the cat and preened his whiskers but the cat just watched him, thank god. Funny thing is that the first few times they saw him they were scared of him.

That being said, my cats were indoor cats their whole lives, are declawed and are both fairly old so that might be a factor.

I really wouldn't allow them to play together or get close willingly thought...

Welcome to the forum, although two of my cats were young when I took them in, I wouldn't trust them with my birds for nothing. But I trust them with my macaws as no one messes with them, not even my dogs. A cockatiel is fair game being smaller in size, I watch my cats glancing over at the smaller birds often. They're thinking evil thoughts.......

I would never allow my cat near my birds and that is because she has been known to kill wild birds and rats. I do however let my dogs (chihuahua's) socialise with the birds.
