I have a 1 year old sun conure, his name is Ivan. :orange:He sleeps with me every night and in the morning i take him to his cage and he goes to the restroom. Well this morning Ivan woke up very frantic and flew to the walls and then back to me. When he landed on me he was breathing hard with a whistle in his voice, then i noticed something was wet. So i got up to bring him to his cage when i noticed poop was all over his bottom. I then put him on top of his cage like i do every morning and he started waddling, i can tell something is wrong with him but i dont know if it is serious. Im very worried... does anyone know what could be happening???:(

Does he sleep in your bed? Maybe you rolled over on him. I would definitely take him to the vet with this one unless he calms down in the next few minutes. If you mashed him that would explain the poop but the whistle I don't know. He may have internal injuries. You didn't say if he sleeps in the bed which can be dangerous for him. But something startled him for him to act so frightened ..........

That is odd the poop could be just an acident of the flight and flying is hard work so it makes some birds breath hard unless they are adapt at flying you said he hit the wall he might have slightly hurt a foot or a wing which could make him walk funny I'd keep an eye on him if he hasn't started acting normal I'd make a vet visit.

In the event that you think your bird is not its self, its best to take it to an avian vet as soon as possible, as they often hide any sickness and can die suddenly. For your peace of mind, best to be on the safe side.

He does sleep in the bed with me...i know this might sound odd. He sleeps on the outside of my body. I initially thought i rolled on him, but any time i move he always squaks to make sure i know he's there so i dont think thats a possibility. I gave him a bath in warm water, and checked to see if maybe i hurt him, but he never flinched or cried when i was feeling him. Im hoping maybe he had a bad dream or something?? he seems perfectly fine now. He is asleep on my back.

Also, he is a very experienced flyer! We built a large enclosure for him in the backyard for during the day. So i didnt think the poop was a result from him flying, but it could have been? Ive never seen his poop stick to him before...

Don't take this the wrong way, but having the bird in the bed with you while you sleep is an accident waiting to happen. Try a night cage, maybe in your room, so that he still feels close to you but is safe!

Yes, its just that he has always slept with me since he was a baby. So every night when i walk by him there he is waiting for me to take him to bed, its kind of a guilt thing. I feel so bad for him he just loves to be with me, but i will start keeping him in one of the spare cages i have and put it next to my bed. Thanks!

I'm with KC on this; while it's good that he's ok, having a parrot in a bed is suffocated bird waiting to happen.

You roll over, wind pipe is trapped, bird can't make more than a whimper, bird dies.

It sounds nasty, but it is likely, and has happened to at least one person on these forums. I'm sure he'll be just as happy in the cage, even if it does take a while it adjust.

I hope your baby is okay......
Please do not sleep with the bird in your bed, he may be used to it, but it is not safe at all.
You mentioned, when you move he always squawks, what if he is in a deep sleep, and does not hear you.
There have been many tragic incidences where birds have been squashed to death in bed, by their guardian.
Would you ever live with the thought, if anything tragic did occur it was your fault.

Thank you!! He seems to be just fine now, but i am keeping a VERY close eye on him!! I could never live with myself if i killed my own baby! :( he is going to have to sleep in his own cage for from now on!

Good to hear! :) He will adjust to sleeping in his cage, always best to be safe with our beloved feathered friends!

I would still suggest taking him to the vet, rather be safe than sorry.

Changing the subject, we had a member who always showered with his bird. I am not saying this is wrong at all. The bird used to walk out the shower on his own. On this particular day, the guardian did not know where the bird had walked to. He accidentally stood on the bird, killing the bird instantly. The poor guardian, went through a very traumatic period, blaming himself. The entire family suffered.

I would not like you to be in his shoes ever

Yes i would rather be 100% sure he is okay! That is so sad :( i woud never want that to happen!

I just popped in to tell you mybabyIVAN that I actually had to deal with a very upset man that used to sleep with his sun conure for years then one morning he woke up & couldn't find the bird, somehow through the night the little bird got inside the pillow case & got smoothered. The man was devastated at the loss of his companion.

Also any unusual behavior, always warrants a visit to the Vets. I do hope your little fellow is OK.

That is awful!! But i can see a sun conure doing that, especially mine. They are very snugly little birds, they love warm small pouches and a pillowcase would be ideal! thank you for sharing! he is most definitely sleeping in his cage now.

Believe me I don't think it is odd I would love to sleep with my baby too, but the danger is just too great. Maybe you could put him in a small night cage on the night stand next to you. Give him a happy hut in there or a towel to snuggle with. Someone recently on the forum lost a baby just this way.
As long as he knows you are beside him he will be fine.

Yes! that is exactly what i plan on doing :) i have a perfect little cage for him and im sure he will do fine. i cant risk losing him!

If he has poop on him then. He may have more of a problem. Have you also potty trained him? Or is he a free popper so to speak? He could have eaten something over night that's not good for him. But I'm with the rest I'm afraid for his own safety he should be in a cage over night. Has he had normal poops since?

Try letting him get a bath or wash him off really good. He may have just gotten scared and pooped if you rolled over on him. Did you find any in the bed or on the floor? That way you can tell if he is still having the problem. Also if he tries to clean himself he could ingest too many germs.
