I feel like such a bad bird mom right now. My little green cheek, Drago, has a death wish. He's a bully and he thinks he's the size of a macaw. He keeps going out of his way to attack the bigger birds who just want to be left alone. A few minutes ago he got into a scuffle with my grey and I immediately rushed to break it up, but Jasper managed to get a hold of his beak. :(

I don't think it went all the way through. It's not bleeding badly, but I cleaned it off and put styptic powder on the wound just in case. He doesn't seem to be in a lot of pain (he's relaxed in the photo). He's trying to scratch at it, but he's alert, preening, making happy noises, and being his usual self. I realize birds are good at hiding injuries and illnesses, so....

Would you consider this severe enough to make an emergency trip to the vet? It's 9pm on a Sunday night and the closest avian vet is an hour away. I will be taking him to the vet tomorrow if it can wait until then. Is there anything else I can do in the meantime? Will this eventually heal or is it a permanent disfigurement?

I would consider this reason enough for an emergency vet visit for sure! Leaving it for any amount of time opens up the possibility of infection even further and in that area any infection or swelling can impact his airway and ability to eat and drink and those things alone are panic worthy even if the actual pain level is low.

I would agree with a decision to seek emergency treatment. He appears to be in pain, with the possibility of infection.

Please keep us updated as able with his progress.

ouch! I'd advise a vet as that looks pretty deep and right on his nares. there could easily be more dmage underneath

possibly Drago will have to stay inside the cage when the others are out until he learns his lesson

Had a similar incident tween a quaker and a golfin.... The quaker lost. Indeed a trip to the vet.. antibiotics oral and a salve (this was 20 years ago).. Then I had to hand feed soft foods because his beak was so sore. Eventually it healed. Xing fingers for your birdie.
