Hello I am hoping someone can help me.
I came home from work and my Amazon is keeping one eye closed, he can open it but when resting he is just closing one eye. He has not done this before.

I talked with the rescue soceity and they said just wait a night if there is no bump or discharge and their isn't, if it still happening in the morning I will take him to the avian vet.

He is acting normally but wondering if anyone here has any experience or advice.

Thanks

When it doubt, take your bird to the vet ASAP. They can be a lot sicker than they appear.

Maybe he's just half asleep... :p I've seen this in my birds quite often...

If you're worried, or you see changes to the eye, please consult an avian vet...

My Hunter does this when she's sleepy. She just looks at me with 1 eye. :)

But of course if he is STILL doing this in the morning, it's vet time, discharge or no discharge.

Thank you,

Ok this morning his eye looked wide open, I had him on my knee before work and he was closing it again, but he was also in snuggle sleepy mode hmmmm.

I just talked to the avian vet who works with the rescue, I LOVE THESE PEOPLE, they called me!!! She asked lots of questions.

When I got him in his cage again, he was eating and his eye was open, I got a chance to take a very close look, no discharge, no swelling.
The vet said if this persist to tomorrow call her in the morning and she will see him. She believes at this point something got in his eye.
I did spritz him last night and tried to help flush his eye out with plain water.

I am such a worry though, my husband is home today and I will run home from work and get him in today if it starts acting up!!

Hats off to you for SO being on the ball with your baby :) Sounds like you've got a terrific vet who cares very, very much.

Glad to hear that his eye was fine this morning. Don't ask me why, but it never even dawned on me that something could have gotten into his eye. It may be as small as an eyelash.

Best of luck, and here's to hoping no vet trip will be necessary :)

Hope it's nothing seriouse , I'd not think it is if they is no discharge or swelling.

I hope not!!

Just talked to Hubby and he said Bosley is quiet, but thats not unusual. He is always quiet until I get home. Makes me want to run home and check though.

I am glad its the weekend and I can spend it with my boy!!
He was in good spirits last night though. Got on my shoulder and stayed there for the first time!!

I had a similar problem with one of my eclectus a week ago, something wasn't right with his eye. I took him to the Vet & he had a tiny bit of fluff under the bottom eyelid that was irritating him. A week on eye drops did the trick & he is fine now.

Don't hesitate with eyes as there could be a tiny scratch on the eye & if not seen to could turn into an ulcer.

Thank you Pedro,

If it's not cleared up or flushed out by tonight, he is seeing the vet in the morning.
I just wanted re-assurance it wasn't a sign of a horrible disease. I am a new bird owner and feel like a new mother LOL

Now hopefully he goes in the carrier without too much trauma!

Good Morning,

It was really good last night, fully open all evening till he got sleepy. This morning it looks good too, but when he is sleepy he still closing it some of the time. I am waiting for the Vet to open, we are PST time, and calling them and updating them. I will take advice from them if I should come in today or what to watch for.

Lucky for me they are open on Sundays too and do emergency visits as well.
My precious baby, he got on my shoulder as soon as I got home from work last night. I think we have a new routine!!He is eating now and very active, I love weekends home with him!!

Aww! You're lucky to have such a good vet nearby. I'm in BC too, the interior, and the only guy in town who does birds does so because someone has to do them. He didn't even know the species of my birds! Thankfully he has real experts on speed dial.

Yes, fortunately there is 3 good vets in the lower mainland specializing in avian care.
One only a 5 minute drive from us and they all do emergency visits.
They are all very good, one works with the rescue center we got our birds from, she is on the board of directors and the other 2 are highly recommended as well.

The closest one to me is 2 hours away in Kelowna, doable, but not ideal.

Theyres a vet in my town but they only do cats, dogs, and farm animals. Can't believe a vet can treat a goat but not a bird ! But luckily Theyres one 15 mins away from us, it's family operated and they have a cockatoo , which makes me comfterble that they understand bird ownership.

I want to thank everyone ans update you. We waited and saw some improvement, but not enough.
Just got back from the vet, Bosley had either bumped or scratched his eye, Vet gave him an injection and eye drops in office and sent me home with oral anti inflammatories. He gave him a full exam and Bosley is otherwise very healthy, weighs 471 grams (1.03 punds)

I towelled him for the first time and he has already forgiven me LOL

Just thought you might like to know

SandyBee i have been wondering how things were going. I am so pleased you took him to the Vet. I thought there might have been a scratch there. He'll be all new in a few days.

Thanks Pedro,

Yes I took the day off work and took him in, I wasn't risking waiting any longer. All went well, met our new avian vet. Really nice, seems very competent. Owns a Macaw. I am so happy that it not more serious.

Also very happy that he is being a cuddle bug and forgives me for towelling him.!!!

Thank you for your advice and support!
