Hey everyone,

This is the first time I'm posting here. First time poster and first time parrot owner.

My Senegal has peeling brown spots on its beak along with a brown spot on the front-middle of its beak. What could the problem be?

I'm not sure if I should bring him (or her?) to the vet. I've only had him for 4 months and he is 6 months old.

I've attached photos, any advice, prior experience, and/or suggestions would greatly be appreciated!

Best,

MilkChocolateMango

i'm no expert but it looks like how there beaks go, the top layer constantly wears of, not sure if its right for a bird your age, but your senes beak looks like my nuts some days an other days its all black

an welcome to the forum

Thanks! Good to know it happened to yours as well. I'll keep a close eye on it for the week. If it continues as is, I'll bring it to the Vet.

Thanks again!

That peeling on the sides looks quite normal for a Senegal. Sid's beak does that fairly often. The one on the front of the beak could be from a little bit of injury he/she had when younger. Or the beak just didn't grow correctly for a little bit. It should continue to travel down towards the tip as the beak grows. My blue crown had something similar in appearance though the color was different on her horn colored beak. When the beak wore down to where that area was exposed, a sliver of beak material flaked off and it was soft material underneath. I scraped it some with my fingernail and her usual rubbing of her beak wore the rest of it off and there was normal beak. A few days later and I could not even tell it was there.

The human equivalent that I can think of is like if you injure your fingernail at the quick. A thicker and off color bit of nail will grow out from there. I have one right now where my little guy got a bit too vigorous with his play and nailed me with the tip of his beak right in the softest part of the quick. Youch!

But anyway, keep an eye on it and see what it does over time.

By the way, that is a very cute little bird. I love the colors of their eyes when that young.

Definetely normal. Kito goes through a beak 'shedding' period every 3 months or so, where much of the top layer if kariton flakes off. No worries.

Glad all is well!
