Help us find another fid...

I'm not opposed to shipping, as long as it's fully weaned.
It does seem weird getting a bird in the mail lol

My goal would be to socialize the newbie as much as I possibly can- hubby wants to be able to handle and love the bird as well.

lol, you don't get a bird in the mail. You would go to the air port and pick them up :)

In case you'd consider shipping :)

Blue Front Amazon For Sale In IA :: BirdBreeders.com

  • I would also talk to the Capt (henpecked) and see if he has any OWs available...or perhaps a Pan?????

Looks like these guys are ready!!...?

Are OWs and Pans more friendly?

Panamas have the reputation of being THE sweetest, calmest and most affectionate of all Amazons. :)

Orange Wings are rather sweet, too.

My personal favorites are the hot threes - go figure - the Yellow Napes, Double Yellow Heads and the Blue Front. :D

But they ALL make great pets if socialized from early age. Blue Fronts can also make excellent talkers. :)

What is your closest major airport? That's where you would most likely pick up your baby.

Ughhhhh I hate deciding lol I'd say either a pan or BFA.

PDX is closest- 30-40 min drive depending on traffic.

I'm partial to my yellow shouldered amazon. I think his small size is cute

I have a Lilac crown Zon and she is sweet and I would say quiet for a Zon. She is quite the talker though, but it is in a normal talking decibel.

Oh good gravy Wendy- those videos were too cute lol

Ok- I think that if we decide to get another amazon it'd be a BFA. 😊 I'm still looking at other species though so we'll see...

How exciting for you to be going though the "What kind of parrot will I get?" stage. I love researching and learning about different parrot species myself and I so try to go outside my comfort zone to expose myself to other possibilities of species I would never consider normally.

This is what I did when I was going though the research to find my third and final flock member. I never considered myself an amazon person. I have had mini macaws and and Eclectus parrot (he was my largest in my little flock). After I was down to just Mihijo my Noble macaw I opened my heart to another parrot the RFM. I always wanted once since I met my first one back in 1997 so it was a dream come true to finally move forward to get the elusive RFM (elusive to me because they were darn EXPENSIVE, way out of my price range) I found a breeder to make payments and when I moved forward for the plans of purchasing a RFM they are half the price they use to be and the breeder allowed me to make payments.

Now that Mihijo died and we adopted the rescue Noble Julio and I am re-entering the workforce this late fall/early winter I would like to have one more parrot for my flock. Just one more as three are my limit with what I do and how I interact with them. I know people out there can have more but three really is my limit so I was at where you are at now. What species will best fit my flock and family.

After several months of hard research and meeting a wonderful breeder out in AZ we have decided to add a Panama amazon to our flock. I would consider myself a macaw person and not an amazon person but the Panama will be the best fit for us for a LOT of reasons. I wish I could take one of the two remaining babies my breeder has of this years hatchings but I need to move Julio to a smaller cage (long story but he is not feeling secure and relaxing in current cage and I need a cage with the grate higher up than my Deltona) so I need to purchase the cage then I need to save for the Panama amazon. Yes, this baby is not cheap but I really like this breeder and want to go with this husband and wife team who have been doing this for probably around 20 years or more.

I am very excited for you. I am doing the happy dance because I know how exciting this stage is with bringing home your feathered friend. Take your time, research, maybe even try to see the interested species of parrot in person because this time you get to chose which kind of parrot is going to join your family.

I can't wait for the announcement of what species will be your next family member.

I have to include a picture of a baby Panama amazon. Look at this baby. So cute makes your eyes water.

@noblemacaw- yes, it's a bittersweet time for me right now... I miss Jackie SO SO very much and my eyes are sweating at the moment (lol), but I'm also excited to be looking for another fid. I also feel very fortunate that my hubby is on board, and in fact suggested that we find a new fid ASAP. I was slightly shocked he wanted another one in the first place because Jackie hated him lol but despite that, hubby loved him and saw the bond I had with him.

I never knew what an amazon was until Jackie came into our home... Despite his bi-polar tendencies I'm glad I had the opportunity to be his mom 😊 I would definitely have another amazon without blinking, but this time I need to look at other species for hubby. I'm excited for you! -getting a pan?! How exciting!! 😄 you'll be an "amazon person" in no time lol I've decided that if we do decide on another amazon it'll be a blue front...i still have to research other species though; expand my horizons.

I'm quite curious about mini-macs...anything you can tell me about them?

Oh let me tell you about Mini macaws......

I had a Noble macaw for almost 18years and a Illiger's macaw for 9 years. Unfortunately both boys have now crossed the rainbow bridge and I miss them every single freakin day. I also had an Eclectus which are very unique parrots but in my opinion the horniest of the parrot species but my Joaquin was my best pet therapist. LOL

My Noble macaw Mihijo was a one in a million parrot. Never nippy or bitey he loved everyone he came in contact with. He had the most even temperament I have ever seen in a parrot and I believe that is because of the species but also because of how I raised him. I exposed this parrot to a lot of different things. He was my companion and my best friend so I took him to a lot of different places and exposed him to a lot of people. He was a wonderful ambassador for parrots. Even Children could handle Mihijo. Anyone could walk up to his cage and take him out he didn't have an aggressive bone in his body. He loved food. Any kind of food and to become his friend all you had to do was offer him food. He also learned many tricks (some very non traditional performances for parrots) and had a very large vocabulary. I can honestly say Mihijo was the "perfect parrot". He truly was one in a million. Geeze I miss my Mihijo.

Diego my Illiger's macaw was bonded to me and loved me to the exclusion to any one else. I did not raise him to be this way because I socialized him like I did Mihijo but he had more of a spicy personality. I can say Diego was not cage aggressive during hormone season. He really didn't act much different during hormone season except for being more vocal. Diego also had a large vocabulary but was also excellent screamer especially in the Spring.

The Red Fronted macaw is between the mini and large macaws. At between 450 to 500 grams this is the largest parrot I ever lived with. I can't even hold Valentino with one hand anymore now I have to hold him like a chicken. LOL My RFM is pure macaw. Very affectionate, busy, loud, has picked up human speech so well he is bilingual now and he is only a year old, and naughty to a fault. OMG..can he be naughty. After only knowing me for 4 days when I took him in for his well bird check up he jumped off of the scale perch into Dr. Blair's laptop keyboard because we were not paying any attention to him. RFM also do the "RFM meltdown" when consists of when feeling affection they will collapse and roll down your chest from the shoulder. They trust that you will never drop them and I have had Valentino choose to be affectionate at times when I did almost drop my baby! I love it when my RFM goes "boneless" as he is very affectionate. My challenge for my RFM is he is so very very smart I have a hard time finding toys that are hard enough to work that brain. He figured out a foraging toy in 10 mins. Each door opened a different way and the toy was suited for an African Grey and I thought "I wonder if this will be too hard for Valentino to figure out?" Well 10 mins later he had every drawer opened and knew how to move the toy. I was gobsmacked. Lupe said. "He is going to be driving our cars next." She was serious.

Ask away about Mini macaws..what do you want to know? They are my favorite parrot and I am a macaw person.

Hello....My name is Rebecca and I am a macaw person.....

I have always been drawn to macaws, but the size of a b&g's beak just scares the crap out of me lol but then I found out about mini macs and thought maybe....

Whatever bird we get, I plan on socializing him/her as MUCH as I can- my goal would be to have a bird that anyone, regardless of age, could handle. We have a toddler and plan on a second down the road, my BIL has 5 kids (ages 11-1.5) and one on the way, and we have plenty of spare family members that all would enjoy interacting with a fid. They all wanted to interact with Jackie, but I was the ONLY one who could even think about touching him.

I would love to have a fid that truly enjoys being around anyone and everyone and would cuddle.

I don't mind having a "smart" bird or a wood chipper since hubby has a wood shop so I have the means to make my own toys, play structures, etc.
