Peter- Indian ring neck, Jenna- Yellow crowned Amazon
could someone help, On tuesday got a 16 week yellow crowned Amazon, we're not sure of the sex, but she's a girl to me!!! she is making a noise a bit like a quiet baying donkey, (the first bit going up in pitch then the next bit quiet low pitch) she has done this once when she tried to fly and landed badly on my front in my arms, and the last 2 evenings, i am wondering if its because she's upset and needs reassurance, or if shes tired, or pining??? any help would be gratefully received

Hey crazy house, welcome to the forum. Can you get us a video? I'm having trouble picturing that sound.

Hi, thanks for the reply. i'll try and get a video tomorrow, shes gone to bed now. its very quiet, sort of 'eeeeeee um' or sometimes its just the 'eeeeeee' my boyfriend says it sounds like shes crying! (he knows nothing about birds though)

I have a video now but i cannot get it to upload onto the forum, so am trying a youtube link. this is the short sound she's making. sometimes she finishes it with a low 'UM' sound.

Ohhh hell how old is your baby and how often dose she make this sound? As her nose could be blocked

she's 4 months. she's making this noise in the late evening and it goes on for a few minutes, until we put her cover on. the other time i heard it was when she had a bad landing, (i thought she'd frightened herself at the time)

It maybe something to do with her nose being blocked but I can't be sure I would have an avian vet look at her just to be safe is her nose leaking or dose it look like she's finding it hard to breath

Her nose is clean, has clear/no noise breathing. other than this noise she's been making at night she, plays like a looney, eating like a gannet and loves to sing along to Abba!! and is nearly saying hello. she loves her cuddles and would fall asleep on me if i let her. she stops the noise when i put her cover on and leave her but when we went back to her to take the video she started it again!!

IMO, She's not happy. That's a OK ,it's bed time , good night. I wouldn't term it stressfull but it's not a happy sound. She'll be fine. Just let me go to bed. Are you in the UK or US is that a YC or a pan ?? Love some pics of your fid.

My Yellow Nape Amazon makes that identical noise. I think it is perfectly normal. He is 5 months old and we have had him almost 4 weeks. It kind of sounds like a puppy whimpering. I posted a thread about this a few weeks ago. If you look back you can probably find it in the Amazon forum. I was like you though and thought something was wrong. I just think some Amazons do that.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I'm taking her for a vet check next week, wanted her to settle in first. I'm in the UK and she's a YC. i'm going try putting her to bed a bit earlier and see if that helps. i'll try and get some photos today.

Hi all, well covering Jenna up earlier has helped, she obviously wanted to go to bed earlier!! i'm sure now it is an ' i'm upset '. she's been incredibly cuddly and attentive today.

Glad all is good. My zons will let you know if your keeping them away from their roost spot or keeping them up too late. They get whinny and Witchy ( did i spell that right ?). Does your's get the noon/early PM naps also ? We have "quiet time" at our house after lunch. IN the evening they are ready for bed soon after the sun goes down.

ha ha, yep that sounds about right. i am having to cover her approx 7.30pm, just before she gets grumpy, i have to be up early so it gives her approx 10-11 hrs sleep. yes i take my little boys for a nap at 1pm (more for me than them!!!) so there is 2 hours quiet time for her then.

I'm trying to teach her to land safely at the moment. she did fly to me yesterday and very ungainly landed on my head!! she enjoyed perching on the boys top bunk bed and watching TV with them, if she starts saying 'go go power rangers' i think i'll shoot myself!!

What do your birds like to do for fun??

They like to hang with dad or go places, the most fun seems to be 'yelling" at the other birds. They do like wrestling with dad so long as they get to win sometimes.
