Help with Charlie

So I just brought Charlie home yesterday and I have a vet appt for weds afternoon...trying the figure out a way to get her in the carrier and handle her at the vet without stressing her too much She is fine with me putting my hand in the cage and changing her food and water as far as not attacking me but if I move my hand toward her she backs away...any help is appreciated

Charlis is just going to have to get used to how things are at your house. Don't stress over keeping him happy. Things have changed and Charlie will adjust. I'd get him a travel cage for future trips and get him used to it while at home. it will help with the stress of something new to have a cage that he can travel in.

I guess my concern is that when I went to get Charlie from her previous owner she tried to fly away and ended up doing a belly flop onto the floor...I don't want her to get hurt so i'm not sure if I should just grab her with a towel and put her in the carrier or if there is a better easier way to get it done...same at the vet I don't want her to try and fly and flop to the ground...She is missing her entire left wing

I guess I would put the carrier on the floor a distance away. Take her out and immediately sit on the floor with her. Try to relax her, maybe some treats, just stay on the floor so she can't fall but a few inches. Then gradually make your way to the carrier, and pop her in. Have a towel handy near the cage and near the carrier just in case you need to towel her. . Hope everything goes well at the vets.

I can't get her out of the cage...she won't step up and is terrified of sticks

She is probably feeling really safe inside her cage right now. I don't know why their is like a 3 day window to get a bird to the vet or the warranty is void. It's dumb. These poor lil creatures are already stressed.

Anyway, you have until Wednesday, so take this time to earn your trust, but don't push too hard. If she moves away, back off, and try again in a little later. Offer her a piece of bread or fruit, even some millet. Birds are crazy about millet. Let her see that you are not trying to hurt her. If she is crazy about millet, when you get her inside the carrier, then you can place some in there and it will calm her. Cover her carrier when you transport her to the vet. The vet will get her out and put her back in. You may need to use a towel. When you get her back home and get her back in her cage, leave her alone for a few days other then changing food and water. But try not to be to animated. She needs a calm voice and a soft touch. I'm no pro, it's just what I would do.

If you don't have a way of getting her out and coaxing into the carrier,towel her quick to make it less stressful. It helps to do it in a dimly lit room as they can't see it coming.The vet will take care of it in the exam room.Talk to her and love her when she's in the carrier, offer treats to her. Also do that lots when you get her home.I thought Bosley was going to hate me the first vet visit, he didn't he was super happy to be back home.

Socalwendy the reason I am taking her so quick is because of the conditions she came from...they were NOT very good and I want to get her looked at asap...plus my vet stays pretty booked as well...I want to make sure she is and stays healthy

Also once she was in the carrier on the way home from getting her she was fine she let me touch her beak through the bars and stayed at the front not backing away

I agree with Sandy 100%. Towel her quickly, get her in the carrier and get on your merry way. She will be all right. Amazons are so incredibly resilient.

Don't worry about what happens at the vet's: he will take care of that.

When I took my Dommie to the vet the other day, I was busily burbling away about how the bird liked to be approached and the vet just reached her hand in and had him out in the blink of an eye. That shut me up! LOL! If the bird is very nervous (Dom was), you might consider covering the cage for the car ride.

Oh I have no doubt your doing the right thing by taking her to the vet so quickly. But just relatively speaking, I don't understand why breeders void the warranty if they aren't seen like within the first week? I can completely understand emergencies and things like that. Your situation is completely different.

But if a breeder claims they are selling healthy birds, why stress it out by taking it to the vet right away? That's all I am saying.

Oh okay....when I got parker the breeder had already taken him and gave me a vet certificate so I didnt have to worry about it
