Hey Im Back

It's amazing how unpopular pet birds are in less populated and northern US states compared to more populated and southern states. All people up here in Maine want are lots of cats and dogs or both. They don't understand why people have birds when they can have "real" animal companions.

Hey, Birdiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiie, I remember you, and well! I'm so sorry that sadness has been part of what brought you back, but... I am sooooooooooooooooooo glad to hear from you. Stick around, you!

Here in rural Kentucky they just opened a "farm Petco"(?) a couple years ago in the next county over. Before that it was only PetSmart all the way out in Lexington. It was only recently it dawned on me that the Petco doesn't sell budgies. They have like four cages with a little conure in each but that's it. Like half an aisle of bird supplies *and* food *and* treats.

Only been to that PetSmart in Lexington once, and that was pre COVID I don't remember what they had for a bird section. There also unfortunately used to be one of those shops that pretends to be a breeder? But it's a flipper, basically. They buy up baby parrots, start hand feeding, sell them unweaned (depends on species tho).

Despite that "lack of availability" birds do seem to be popular companions down here. Nearest bird vet is in Lexington tho 😖

Where I live in Maine there are husbandry laws for pet stores that prevents many pet stores from selling birds. They sold budgies in my town at Pet Quarters up until 6 years ago and all local stores stopped. Perhaps there are laws like this in other areas and that's why they don't sell birds.

i just wish i guess it was easier for me to locate a budgie because I am STRUGGLING

Im sorry you are hurting so much. sending big hugs. Are you only interested in another budgie, or would you consider another small species? Budgies make friends very easily in my experience, and don't care *too* much if their friend is a budgie, a cockatiel, a lovebird, etc. Something to consider. Hoping the right bird finds their way to you soon

This is true, and I believe that another species can fulfill a budgie's need for companionship, but OP shouldn't count on housing a budgie with a new bird unless it's another budgie. If you have a particularly social bird who would prefer to live with his friend then get another budgie. If he's fine sleeping and hanging out on his own then you would probably be ok to get another small bird.
