Pepe-Mexican red headed amazon
Hi my name is Jasmine and I have a Mexican redhead amazon who is about 4 years old. Im really new to this so if you have and tips please share=]. Well I will share with all of you me and my :green1: story. it was a little more than a year ago that I got him. I did research for about a year before I went out and looked for a bird of my own. I went in to a little pet store and saw this poor little amazon sitting in a small cage. I didn't really want a amazon because i know how there temperament could be. But I couldn't stop thinking about him so a couple days later I went back to see him and he let me pick him up. It shocked everyone there because they said he was really aggressive but for some reason he liked me. So after thinking about it I decided I was picked and that I found my bird. Before he was officially mine I use to go visit him every chance I got. Soon came the day to bring him home. As soon as he came home he acted like he always lived here. Still to this day he hasn't been aggressive to me actually hes been the cuddliest bird I have came across. I later found out he was neglected in his 1st home and was brought the pet shop where he was for a year. He's super sweet to be but could be aggressive to others at times. Well that's our story so far.

Welcome to the forum!!!! When a bird picks you, it creates the ultimate bond! I have several of my birds that picked me from day one. They can be very aggressive with strangers but tolerate my partner. Except one, Willie, he is truly my bird and no one else can touch him not even my partner. And my evil Java who attacks anyone that gets too close to me....lol

thanks. and i understand the bond. My amazon will fly to attack my boyfriend if he's too close to me. But when he feels like it he will let others pick him up and scratch his head even my boyfriend. :green1:

Welcome! Forums can be a lot of fun and this one is great. A lot of great bird people here :D
What's your amazons name?

That's great you have such a good bond with your amazon. I have a galah cockatoo, she and I are the best of friends and I love her so much, I also think she picked me in a way. I can do pretty much anything with her and she makes my life so much brighter. I can only hope I will develop a close bond with Kinji, my African gray, as well :)

The chance to share a life and form a bond with a creature as amazing as a parrot is something truly special. Few people are cut out for it, for those who are it makes our life very unique :)

Offering tips is easy, but it's often better if you ask questions as they arise...there's usually an answer or two near by.....

Right now it's mating season for most parrots, so your bird's aggressiveness towards BF could be tied to that (sees him as competition), but that will go away in a couple of months, also companion birds are very attuned to body language, reading yours & giving you indications of their being upset, happy, going to bite, etc.....if you give a stern NO or NO BITE when it goes after your BF or others, show your displeasure in face & body language, then put the bird back in its cage, it usually doesn't take long for a bird to change its tune.....the key is to make the bird understand how displeased you are with that kind of behavior.....they always want your approval.....unless Chucky trained the bird...then all bets are off.....

Really though, you need to work on the possessive aggression thing, because a bird bite is like a dog bite to a lot of people.....they see dollar signs & many just happen to have their favorite ambulance chaser on speed dial.....

Glad you joined the forum.....we're pretty easy to get along with around here.....

@copperarabian. galah cockatoos are so beautiful. and i love african greys...hope to own one someday.

@weco That's really good advice. I'm the one who trains him so i will use these new tips to help this possession thing out.
