Big Bird _ Blue & Gold Macaw
That was a major question of mine when I adopted BB. I know the beak wrestle and a lot of other things posted on the forum but actually seeing it is amazing. So this last week I have spent way to much time with google trying to fine how they play. I wanted to see it in action. BB has been reaching out and pulling my hand then hitting with his beak and letting go. I could not for the life of me figure what he was doing. THEN this video came across my news feed of birds playing. This is so amazing I wanted to share with you . True its not a macaw :( but oh so cute

Hahaha! Sweet video, Christine! Thank you for sharing!

Will we be seeing your application of the techniques learned from this video next? Your hand vs BB? Bring it on! 😉

That's fun!

Yep. Sweepea rolls over and plays on her side/back like that with me all the time. This is a nightly occurrence in my house... and that's exactly what I meant by flopping over and playing on your lap. She'll keep that up for as long as you let her...

They play rough. It doesn't mean they're "attacky" or "aggressive." People misinterpret play for attack. They're goofy. More often than not it's play.

React badly to an invitation to play, and the bird reacts to your reaction. "I was trying to be nice and play with you, and you came after me!" NOW you really will have an aggressive macaw on your hands.

Turn it into a game with a macaw, and you tap into that natural goofy streak... and they are putty in your hands.

Maggie constantly plays the game with the fingers that you described.

When Sweepea does this one with me, she's actually regurging. She bangs her beak against my hand, like she's going to bite the crap out of me, but instead of closing her beak and latching on, she brings up a present...

Maggie on the other hand, will grab me as I walk by and initiate a beak wrestling session. She "ambushes" me sometimes...

Yeah I am still trying to learn BB> He will as you say give me presents. WAY more than I want LOL He also bluff at times after doing it.

Sometimes he will um swing his head back and forth hitting my hand with his beak.

Yeah, that's totally a form of play. That one is fairly common.

Yeah, well, I'm pretty sure he'll do it again... (like multiple times a day.)

So, don't beat yourself up over it.

Dance with him yourself, sway back and forth, and then gently fist bump the beak as he's doing it... He'll probably get a kick out of that one, and make it one of your "ritual greetings."

That's another one Sweepea does all the time. She actually head butts my nose with her beak, while quacking like a duck, and doing the head sway thing... It's pretty funny! She's been doing this with me almost as long as I've had her...

You should be able to trigger this with him by just walking up to him, and doing the same head movements he did to you...

That's macaw for let's play! Pretty sure he'll react the same way when he sees it...
