Sprite the cinnamon green cheek conure.
SO as most of you know, I just got my green cheek :) He is acting really scared, but last night he was squacking like he wanted to come out, but when I started to open the door he ran away. Do you think I could take him out tonight??
edit: He just let me pet in between his wings (on his back). He finally figured out how to get inside his birdy tent xD He seems really tired to :/

How much time do you have today to spend with him? I ask, because if you have an hour or so (maybe more, an hour goes by fast), where you could take him out of the cage and set him out...say on your bed and just sit or lay there and let him walk around and explore. Lay a towel down, sprinkle some treats, even if it's just some of the food you are feeding him, and read, draw, color, if you have TV/radio in your room, you could even turn it on for some background noise if you want. Then just "chill" with him for as long as you can...oh and keep some wipes or toilet paper near by so you can wipe up any poo's.

He might not do a lot at first, he might just stand and look around, expect him to be nervous...this is all new to him, and to you and he senses your fears too, so try not to be scared. You will do just fine with him.

Talk to him a lot, hello, say his name, such a good boy, you're so pretty, awww...look at you! Things like that, he'll relax and start exploring and before you know it, he'll be climbing all over you.

Now, I know many people will disagree with me here....but it's worked for me for every bird we have...Chicken Little was completely wild and would take chunks of flesh if given the chance....so when I took him out of his cage, I used a little towel and grabbed him, (so I wouldn't get bit) then once he was out, he was GREAT! He LOVED his "walkabout" time. I always offered my finger first for him to come out and go back to his cage, if he resisted that, then I'd just towel him out and back into his cage if necessary.

Within a couple weeks he was happily hopping up on our fingers to come out and go back. We never towel now...no need to.

Again, I know many will disagree with it, but if you offer your hand for him to come out and he takes off to the back of the cage, or he just won't come out of his cage even if you leave the door open all day, and especially if he'll bite HARD if you try and hold him, then toweling is an option that I have found to be effective and has given us solid results to hand taming our birds.

So in answer to your question, how long before you take him out of his cage...I'd say, what are you waiting for? Take him out and spend as much time "chillin'" with him as you can. Sometimes, the transition of going in and out of their cage is a scary one but if he enjoys his time out with you, then it will only be a matter of days, maybe not even that long, before he's waiting at the door for his quality play time with you.

Have a great day with your new baby!

My amazons were completely wild when i got them too. They were terrified of anyone coming to close or into thier cage even just my hand. So i scooted a folding chair up against thier cage so if i sat on it my back would face it and opened the door behind me I then read a book out loud to them for an hour or two a day. Before long they would come from the back of the cage to the front and babble along with my reading, then they started climbing down to the chair back and when they started that i would turn around ever so slow day by day until i read faceing them and they would climb onto my leg and listed saying jibber jabbers the whole time i talked. They would start screaming if i stopped reading though lol. It seemed they liked it. Once they were used to me around their cage i began perch training to work on step up training. They are awesome now! between running toward me anytime i get near the cage or screaming anytime i scoot a chair near the cage cause they want me to read lol. They are crazy characters now who love being out and about. Only thing now is my male bird thinks my dog is a pony and tries to ride him any chance he gets. lol Dog is tolerant but not happy about that lol.

Oh my god he has been in his sleepy hut a long time so I walked over to check on him. I kept getting a little closer, closer, closer, then he put his head down for me to stratch. I put my fingers in and rubbed his neck and he stayed there and fell asleep <3 <3
edit: It seems like he's always had problems with coming out of the cage... In the breeder the manager had a hard time getting him out. Then I tried and he came to me more willingly but he bit me (not that hard it hardly hurt) but I got him out and once he was out he snuggled up to me and wouldnt leave me (even when I was trying to put him in the carrier!!)

He's a cutie!

Oh my goodness....he's soooo cute! The pineapple mutation is definitely my favorite, lucky you!

Transitioning in and out of the cage definitely takes time for them to get used to. All my birds at first had an adjustment period with it. Once he gets to know you better it'll get easier and easier.

As for your shoulder, you might want to discourage it as much as possible for these beginning months of bonding with him. I've found that birds tend to get territorial on the shoulder and when you go to get him off he'll bite you or anyone trying to help you and run to your other side and resist like you wouldn't believe.

Other then that, have fun with him today! You deserve it, you've waited a long long time for this. :D

oh the shoulder thing is good to know. It is kinda hard to get him off once hes on...

Hey guys, how do you bathe your conures??

Hi,Im new on here I just got a sun conure a week ago and hes almost 2.I adopted him from someone. He doesnt let me take him out the cage,so I just leave the door open for him.Sometimes he will come and get on my finger. He doesnt let me pet him when I want to either.I just think it takes time.I might try that towel method someone suggested to you..lol.Oh yeah since I have had mines I have only seen him bathe one time...lol

Congrats on such a beautiful baby! Just follow the advice you have got and he should come running when you open the door soon. My sun LOVES his bath. i just hold him under the shower and the goes wild. You can try the sink, shower, or a pie pan/dish on a table. Most conures love water almost as much as ducks. I am glad your wait was well worth it. You will have a friend that will always be there for you and love you more than you could dream. Take lots of pics you will be surprised how much they change and you miss it until you look at the pic a year later.

OP, how old is your conure, he looks small/young?

Maybe compared to a human they look rather tiny.. On youtube, they seem a bit bigger. On wiki they say they are about 10 inches from tip to tail.. I dunno. I'm trying to get a visual of their size... Hmmm.. How tall are they from head to feet, not head to tail? Who really includes the tail, tails can be really long.

I think he's about 2-3 months...The manager said he will fill out more (and he has lots of pin feathers and those will come in) but she said he wont actually grow more. She also said that she thinks he is on the smaller side. I'd say hes only about 3 inches from head to feet. They do look bigger on youtube.....i agree. They are probably as big as cockatiels.

Did they not give you paperwork with the hatch date on it? If they are the breeder they should know the exact day/month he/she was born.

Sprite, love the name, looks just like my Bailey, also a cinn gcc. I am having issue with the bathing thing too. Bailey wants to be a dirty bird, so I am gradually introducing this cleaning thing. Every week I give him a light spray with a bottle. Have also tried shallow dishes, deeper dishes and its a no go, but he needs his bath, so I spray him. Hope I helped

They didnt give my any paperwork...
Yeah I put a little shallow bowl in the bottom but he hasn't done anything with it. Im gonna try to mist him a little later today.

They're pretty small. Mine fits in the palm of my hand. I didn't expect him to be so tiny. I just measured Gambi & he's almost ten inches, about half of that is tail. About bathing, I bring Gam in the shower with me. C:

I put Maxx in the sink fill a bowl with water, then use the sprayer to give him a shower, he loves it. Now that he is molting, he gets one everyday.
