So I became the proud owner of a lovely ducorps cockatoo on Tuesday. He's 5 years old and called chucky. He has been really timid and kept to himself since we got home home. He is in new surroundings with a new castle to love in and new toys so I fully understand it will take him time to adjust and for him to actually trust me.

I'm unsure what to do for the best to bring him out of his shell without overwhelming him. I've been giving him lots of nice treats and talking to him alot, while trying to be distant enough to not smother him. I'm not expecting him to put his trust in me overnight but I'd like to know if I'm going about things the right way to make sure he is happy.

I can imagine there has been several posts like this on this forum, any words of wisdom would be gratefully appreciated :-) thanks in advance

It sounds like you are going about it in the right way! You may also be interested in clicker training him through the use of positive reinforcement training.

Slow and steady always works well. When I brought my GW home I started with feeding her treats through the bars, then I would sit in a chair and talk to her. I then began to open her door and offer treats from the outside. She would slowly come out and take it from my hand. Before I knew it, she was letting me pet her, then stepping up on a stick, then onto my arm!

Just try to take his lead and go at his pace. A little patience goes a long way! Good luck!

Thanks for the replies, feel much better knowing I'm taking the right steps, I have been rewarding the good behavior. I'm going to look into the clicker training too, thanks again :-)

Congratulations on getting a Ducorps, they are just fantastic and I'm beyond jealous! You're taking the right steps, slow and steady, there's no magical thing we can suggest (other than treats, because, hey, they seem pretty magical) so just keep chatting away and poking some treats through. Offer your hand slowly (when you get around to doing that) and positive reinforcement all the way! :)

Sounds like you're doing all the right things, slow and steady is the key! The local shop to me has a ducorps, and he's a very handsome bird.
